Ricky Nelson had a great guitar player.....James Burton. I used to watch "Ozzie and Harriet" and Ricky and his band usually played a song at the end of the show. Here's one to show you Burton then, and one of Burton today. Nice clean, technical stuff without all that high pitched whining of some of the heavy metal guitarist. He's shown here playing a Fender Jazzmaster, like the one I had (see my photos), but he actually played a Fender Telecaster for this song.
Then....great clean solo.
Now....

On a more modern side, I would say Zakk Wylde of Ozzy/Black Label Society is prolly one of the greatest guitarists ever. He is just so one with the guitar, with vast knowledge and styles. Hell, even his warm-ups are awesome! I've been playin myself for almost 22 years and I still can't get close to that level of playing. Check him out on YouTube, bro!

Well, obviously super talented as most current guitar players are, but for me, all these riffs sound the same. When I hear a solo from these guys they all sound alike, as if they're copying each other. Is he fast, yes, good, oh yes, but I don't hear anything original, but I'm an old guy too, so.....lol.

When I was a kid you could buy guitars out of the Sears catalog. Silvertone and Danelctro were the two most popular. Great sounds on the cheap, about $50 or so. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the white/black models that were popular. There was a group in our area that was actually called "The Silvertones" and played the black model guitars.

LOL...you gotta find Zakk's clean stuff too. But I do agree with you that something music lacks nowadays is originality. It seems to me that most of the bands now (I'll give it a timeline...we'll say 1998-Present) literally picked up thier guitars, learned how to play 3 chords and whined about thier girlfriends for vox, then started a band and SOMEHOW got signed. Hmm... Now this is just my opinion.
Anyway, I am currently not playing in any bands right now. I did when I was younger, like still in my early 20's, but now I just do not have the time to commit to being in a band. I do love it, don't get me wrong, but life caught up with me. So I mostly jam and write by myself.
Now, I am a self-professed tone whore, so I have 9 guitars that are all different from each other. My main workshorses are my Les Pauls, (a Zakk Wylde Les Paul Custom and a custom Hybrid-type thing...pretty much it is set like a 7-string but minus the high E string), in which I'll do anything from metal to blues on. On the acoustic side, I have 2 Ovations, a 12-string 1866 Legend and a 6-string CC057. I work with 2 Ibanez Soundgear basses, a 5- and 4-string, respectively, a Schecter Omen 7-string, an old BC Rich Warlock Rave II model (my 1st guitar...still a brute tho), and finally a Dean Camo-V. Yeah...I'm a tone whore..lol

Man, nine? I don't even have one. I've been thinking of picking something up, but just don't know if I'm played out or not. If I do, it would be an old model. I'd love a Fender Telecaster.
A trick I used I got from James Burton. He used to use a banjo string to replace the wound G string, but I just used a B string to replace it and I could do some real tweaking of that string on solos.I'm sure there are a bunch of tricks today.

Yeah, thats it. That is an NJ model tho, and in my opinion didn't play as well as the Rave series (which are now defunct). Here is a pic of my Warlock

Also, in my opinion, I think you should pick up another guitar. Man, once it is in your blood it never goes away. Sometimes takes a back seat for a bit, but once you pick it back up its like reuniting with an old friend. If you like Telecasters but Fenders are a lil out of the price range, check out Fender's subsidary, Squire. Here is a really great site for you if you wanna browse around. http://www.americanmusical.com
But yeah, I think you should get back into it, even if it is just to sit around the house and relax. Granted, you might be a lil rusty at 1st, but as I said, once its in your blood it never goes away...no matter how long it has been.

I bought my son the bundle pack Squire maybe six years ago for Xmas. Lord knows where it is now. If I did, I'd have to buy something that isn't cheap. I've actually seen the old original Silvertones and Danelctros available pretty cheap. Man, amps cost an arm and a leg now, too.

A little John McLaughlin. Yes, Chet Atkins was almost a perfect guitar player, every note clean as a whistle.

And Chet Atkins playing with Don McLean, one of the all time most beautiful ballads.
