The pitching matchup today in the series finale was rather interesting. Both starters, Jake Peavy and Gio Gonzalez, were looking to right their ships. Peave was 1-3 with an ERA just under 5, and Gio Gonzalez wanted his first decision of the season (in addition to lowering an ERA over 6).
In the pitcher's duel, Gio Gonzalez prevailed. He threw a lot of balls to frustrate the Tigers' fans, but was effectively wild as a result. He struck out 9 in 7 innings.
The Sox touched up Gio in the 3rd, when Alex Rios had an RBI triple and was later driven in.
The power display in the bottom of the 7th secured Gonzalez's win. Alex Avila and Michael Morse had solo shots.
Jose Valverde pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for the save.
