“Do the developers even watch hockey?” is an insult that frustrated sports gamers often type on the Internet to express their dissatisfaction with the (lack of) authenticity in Electronic Arts' NHL video games.

The day-to-day realities of making sports video games, however, often require designers and producers to convey their gameplans to programmers who may not have much experience with the sport that their scripts are designed to simulate. This remains the case today, to a large extent. But as the tools and languages that companies use to make video games are becoming more standardized -- and are being widely taught to thousands of college kids -- the number of sports gaming programmers with relevant, real-life sports experience is on the rise.

The Golf Club's third update is scheduled to arrive very soon. The Harvest theme will be included, marking the 8th theme released for the game. Themes are various environments the Greg Norman Course Designer uses when creating a course. They describe the terrain, flora, fauna, water, tees, fairways, rough, greens and the surrounding land.

Quote:
The terrain is quite soft so there won’t be a great deal of run on the fairways but they won’t be as sluggish as the Autumn Theme. The rough, whilst thinner than the Rural Theme, will be quite unpredictable as it could be damp in places. Getting in amongst the thick stands of large trees won’t be much fun either.

The greens will be fairly slow and receptive so you should be able to land the ball close to the hole and not see it run too far past. On the downside the wind will, generally, be quite strong which is normal for this time of year in the region.

Slightly Mad Studios has revealed the Xbox One Achievements, PlayStation Trophies, and Steam Achievements for Project CARS. All of them were inspired and named by the Project CARS community.

Quote:
Categorized by our four pillars of Career, Solo, Online, and Community in order to ensure an even spread across the game, they were then sub-divided into a range of difficulties from easy ones you may get simply by trying something out to fiendish ones that may take particular skill or time. We've also included some secret ones to so you'll have to do some exploring to find out how to unlock these.

These particular achievements caught my eye:
  • A Day In The Life (45G/Silver)
Completed a 24 hour race using only realtime progression (and why not stream it?!)
  • Reversa Corsa (20G/Bronze)
Completed a Quick Race Weekend lap of Azure Circuit in reverse from cockpit view without collisions
After a couple of delays, Project CARS is scheduled to arrive on April 7th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

In a blog post on the HB Studios site
, the progress on the upcoming season mode for The Golf Club was detailed a bit. Included was a note about some of the bugs the team ran into and also the five different season modes you can play through were detailed.

Local Club Season -- Compete against players from your local club. The events are staged at forgiving courses and the opposition strength is of a good local amateur standard. This is the place to cut your teeth.

Amateur Season -- You’ll be competing against the best amateurs around the world on a combination of challenging courses and others that are more forgiving. Winning here will open the gate to pitting yourself against the Pros.

Pro Am Season -- Challenge yourself against a combination of professional and top amateur players on courses of varying difficulty. A good season here will elevate you into the Pro Tour.

Pro Season -- The Pro Season is a tough tour against top quality opposition on tough courses. You’ll need to be at your best to break into the elite list of players.

Elite Season -- This is where the best of the best are playing. To be crowned the #1 golfer you will need to play at the highest standard consistently on tough courses. Have you got what you need to be #1?

What do you think about the different levels of season mode? Where will you end up playing?

In a recent post in the Franchise Hockey Manager 2 forums, developer Sebastian Palkowski detailed the new features coming to the Hockey management simulator set to release in late May:

Quote:
"1. 2014/15 and 2015/16 season data: The game will feature over 23 playable leagues, as well as a great deal of non-playable leagues. The game will ship with 2014/15 data and then be updated before the 2015/16 season starts with a new roster set to help gamers get the most up-to-date experience.

2. Completely overhauled graphic user interface and navigation:
FHM 2 will have a completely new interface, which suits the complex world of hockey much better. Our two goals for this year’s game were to make the game look nicer and make navigating in the game as easy as possible. In our opinion, we have made big steps in both areas.

3. FaceGen: For the first time, FHM will ship with FaceGen support. This brings much more life to the game. We have models in place for skaters, goalies and staff, including changing colors of helmets based on the team the player is on.

4. Completely re-designed Game Engine: We ripped out the old engine and built this very important part of the game brand new, from the ground up. With the new engine, every second of a game is simulated and the engine keeps track of exactly which zones the puck and all players are, at all times. This allows us to simulate the flow of a hockey game much better than before, with each event playing out through the engine. From player passing or moving the puck up the ice, to faceoffs that matter in what zone they occur, dump-in’s, clear attempts, puck battles on the board, breakaways, and many events - it will all be an intricate part of the new simulation engine.
Note: Big parts of the new match engine will be available for FHM 2014 before the FHM 2 release. FHM 2 will feature a tweaked and refined version of the initial release of the match engine.

5. Game Rating: FHM 2 features a new way for you to evaluate the performance of your players - the Game Rating (GR). During a game, each event (good or bad) will change the GR, so you always know how well a player performs on the ice. Since the calculation includes the role of the player and the situation on the ice, you can get a pretty good picture of the performance. Not all players are goal scorers and will have their names show in the score sheet - now you can accurately track how everyone is contributing to your team’s success or failure - from your stay-at-home defensemen to your grinding 4th line forwards.

6. Redesigned Fictional Mode: We have removed the fictional mode from FHM 2014 and replaced it with a new version that is much more streamlined and stable. Now you can play with just one league (or add major junior and/or a farm team level if you like) and form it to your likings by changing selected rules and options (which stay in a sensible range - so no Hobbit league on Mars).

7. League Expansion: Before a season you are now able to expand any league you want by two teams. Want to bring the NHL to Las Vegas? Or bring a team back to Quebec? Go for it!

8. Basic Online League Support: Use FHM 2 to play an online league with your friends. GM’s can upload team files (or draft lists, for example) to the commissioner, who then simulates the game forward, before uploading a new league file. In addition the game produces CSV outputs you can use to generate a web page for your league if you wish. Prove your mettle as a GM against some of the other sharp minds who are fans of FHM!

9. Pre-season games: Need to make some tough roster decisions to get your team ready for the start of the season? Before the regular season starts, use these games to prepare your team for the regular season and find out who will make the squad.

10. Head coaches: It is now possible to hire a head coach for your team and play as GM only.

11. Historical changes: We’ve added new historical seasons to the game, so you can start even further in the past. In addition, you can now continue your game when reaching the last historical year and turn your game into a fictional league. We’ve added historical dollar values and a season preview, so you always know the situation for every season you are just about to start.

12. Greatly expanded news section: We added many additional news types and expanded the text of all news to give you more immersion and help bring your league to life.

13. There are many more changes and additions to the game (listed are just a small number):
- New tactics system
- New player development system
- New training system
- New player roles
- New job safety system
- New player happiness system
- Retiring players can now become staff - is your former star forward your next head coach?
- Revised staff contracts
- New player fatigue system
- New player consistency system
- Line chemistry
- GM and Coach scores
- All-Star game added
- Completely revised league/team/player history
- Redesigned screens (such as lines, tactics, manager-home and playoff screens)
- Extended draft logs
- New logo templates"

EA Sports UFC has just updated their ranked points and leaderboards system, resetting all FighterNet stats and leaderboard rankings. Under the new format, your rank and position on the leaderboard will reflect on your overall performance. Rank points will now be affected harshly when a player loses or disconnects from a fight.

SEASON RP = Rank Points earned and lost from the seasons meta (promotions, holds, relegations)
FIGHT RP = Rank Points earned and lost from individual fights (wins/losses and win/loss type)

[1] The seasons meta-game now has less influence on Rank Point gains and losses.

In broad strokes, the SEASON RP gap between the bottom and top-tier divisions is much smaller and the gap between high/low SEASON RP values overall is also much smaller. Basically, the meta isn't going to move the needle as much. This is the most obvious change.

[2] Fight results now have more influence on Rank Points.

Losing fights will now cause you to lose RP and this scales up if you get finished. In comparison, current RP logic does not deduct points for any loss type. This is the change that will separate good from great on the Leaderboards as there is a strong incentive to not only finish fights, but to avoid getting finished.

[3] Rank Point loss from disconnects has been significantly increased.

Self-explanatory, but disconnects will now result in a harsher Rank Point penalty.

[4] Leaderboards and FighterNet Profiles have been refreshed.

Again, self-explanatory, but the Leaderboards have been refreshed so that these tuning changes can be properly reflected in the competitive scene.

2K Sports has just revealed the brand new MyPARK for the Old Town Flyers. They officially won the MyPARK Championship a couple of weeks ago for winning the most Rival Days across all platforms. The new park is located on an aircraft carrier.

The new MyPARK will be available tomorrow, replacing the old court and 2K has cut off access to join the affiliation for a while.

If you are a member of the Sunset Beach Ballers or Rivet City Rough Riders, you will need a rep level of Pro 3 or higher to travel to the new park.

Congrats to the day-one Old Town Flyers, not the bandwagon jumpers.

Imagine running the break with CP3. As you grab the board and run in transition, Boogie Cousins lifts off to the rim, resulting in a perfectly-timed lob for a thunderous alley-oop as Sleep Train Arena erupts. For this to be reality, the NBA would have to gift Sacramento the All-Star Game. But with NBA 2K15, NBA reality is - as we all know – whatever you want.

Yesterday I talked about scoring chances in FIFA 15, and today I'm here to change things up and talk about the jostle mechanic in FIFA 15.

First off, I have to explain how jostling/jockeying works in this year's game. The jostling mechanic, at its core, is a simple and smart gameplay mechanic that you can use on both offense and defense. On offense, you'll jostle/jockey for position by using L2 (on PS4) or LT (on Xbox One). On defense, you'll mostly use the B button (on Xbox One) or Circle button (on PS4) to "lock on" and fight for position against the ball carrier. (Take note: from here on out if I mention controls I'll be mentioning just PS4 controls for simplicity's sake). At its core, it's a mechanic that allows some push and pull to go on between two players as they fight for position and the ball.

Still with me so far? Cool, then after the jump I'll show off the jostling mechanic in GIF form as we get in to the meat of this breakdown.
