It's a change from other raceing games where you seem to be able to blow out the AI most of the time. I found myself finishing 3 to 4th in some races until I figure which car worked better on the track or type of race. It is an arcade racer not something like gran torismo or forza. Can't say much about the online since Ihaven't been able to get into a race.
