E3 2012 is right around the corner, and shots have been fired across the bow of sports gamers everywhere. As gaming hardware and software sales continue to experience uncomfortable dips, announcements large and small have been made by the big boys of the industry – Electronic Arts, Take-Two, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. Here’s a look at five that have caught my eye, and why they’re troubling to those of us that love the genre.

This scares me. I really hope somebody picks up the MLB License. Can you imagine no baseball on the Xbox?

I am sure games like Madden and FIFA will survive no matter what though.

Will be interesting to see what happens with sports game next gen. Seems the hay day of sports games are over.

Doesn't really bother me any. The sports games I play are football, MMA, baseball, and basketball in that order. I'm still playing Madden/NCAA 07 on my old xbox b/c the football titles this generation haven't been worth much imo. MMA has been better on these consoles than the previous, so I believe it'll get better. As long as Sony continues to make TheShow, baseball should be fine. If 2K stays in basketball, they should be fine too.

I think sports have already taken a downside this generation before we even get to next generation. Simply, b/c of choices. At one point I had like 4 football game; Madden, NCAA, 2K, and QB Fever (?). Now, you get one, maybe two choices if you're lucky.

Why isn't The Show on Xbox? Sony exclusive or something? If its not a "Sony game" wouldn't that be good news that 2k falls out the race to open up the possibility of the Show coming to the 360?

Other than that, I think, at least, the top 5 sports will be fine (American football, European futbol, NBA basketball, MLB Baseball, and NHL Hockey).

Sony makes the Show. It will never be on Xbox.

Do you really care where I sent this from?

The bigger question is why doesn't Konami take its Pro Yakyuu Spirits engine and make a multiplatform MLB game out of it?

Well cool, spambot bumped this because I missed it when it was posted.

As far as the MLB exclusive goes, I say... GOOD. It goes to show that exclusive deals benefit nobody, really. Hell, even though Madden puts up great numbers, the vibe surrounding it is generally negative and it seems even less of a deal then it was back in the heyday of 2004, 2005, 2006 when you had Maddenoliday and all that stuff. Maybe me & my friends are just getting older, but nobody really cares to pick it up at midnight anymore.

Anyway, there are good sports games already out there. I'm still playing MLB 11 The Show (and would've been content with MLB 09, but I splurged ), NHL 11 (first EA NHL game I've owned since NHL 2004, otherwise NHL 2k10 was pretty fun for me), and Madden 12 (again, I could've stuck with Madden 10 and been happy enough). I still rock FIFA 10. Other people are still playing NFL 2k5, CH2k8, APF 2k8, etc. Sports games will survive, it'll just be extra mileage out of really good, recent titles instead of brand-spanking new editions.

Re: 5 troubling signs for sports game fans across the world

Honestly if sports games die off next gen I will not even buy the system. I play 95% sports games. I still think next gen they should release games every other year and have a DLC in between. Think about it release it @$59.99 with a $8.99 DLC in the next year. Think about it that is $68.98 for the same game over 2 years. Plus the game wouldn't have as large of a price drop after year 1 as it's the the most recent game that was just updated.

Year 1: sell 300,000 copies @ $59.99 = $17,997,000
Year 2: sell 100,000 copies @ $39.99 = $3,999,000
Year 2: sell 200,000 DLC's @ $8.99= $1,798,000

Thats a solid chunk of $$ you would pay your team full time on year 1, start them back a year later part time and work on the DLC then work on the next years game. I think that would really help the development of games. The team pours themselves in full time for a year takes a break and works on a side project or another game etc... bring them back and jump full into the game again with a fresh approach.
