A Sporting Man: EA's Peter Moore Interview: GameDaily

GameDaily has posted their interview with EA Sports President, Peter Moore .

GameDaily: "My last question is going to be about Madden 2009 for the PC. You did say in your blog that you had ideas on how to revitalize the PC for sports games. Can you talk a little about how you can exploit the platform?" Peter Moore: "Well, it's disappointing, and as I said, it would be an unpopular decision, but we're running a business. It's been very challenging for us over the past few years. People took some of what I said out of context – 'serious business challenges on the PC.' Well, the sentence actually [says] 'for the sports category on the PC."

I found a little gem in there. All might not be lost if EA acquires 2k. I like how he said that you look at their teams and engine to see if they could help where they were lacking. Maybe Peter Moore would use some of the existing assets from say, APF to improve Madden. Or NBA 2k code to help NBA Live. That would be awesome. It would be so much better than a liquidation of some of the best gaming code ever written. Here's to hoping.....

Haha. They should look at Live and see what tiny improvements they can add into 2k is more like it. If 2k gets acquired those teams will get wiped out and we'll wait 3-4 years for "integration" like we've seen with the ESPN license.

All this multiplayer - broader audience talk is going to ruin sports gaming if it's just EA brands on the shelf.

That may sound harsh, but really, Peter Moore is coming off sounding like an idiot.

First, he claims, "I'd like to think, from a marketing view, [EA Sports is] probably the only real brand in video games", which is absolutely untrue - ask anyone who's played NBA 2K8 or NFL 2K5. EA Sports is the "only real brand" not by merit, but by brute monetary force of buying up exclusives.



Then comes this winning statement:

we've built sports games to take advantage of the plasma televisions, and the new hi-def experiences that people are having in their homes. We've also built them to be very social. So whether it's playing online, or equally likely, two or four of you in the room together, the PC business has just...waned.

Apparently, Moore hasn't noticed people buying LCD widescreen monitors that are capable of broadcasting an HD signal. Oh, and apparently, no one plays games online on the PC. WHAT?

Then he prattles this line:

BIZ: But many people were pointing out the irony of the "renaissance of PC gaming" you talked about while at Microsoft.

Moore: And you know what? I totally agree, and I'll stand by that, with Vista. But sports is not playing a huge role in that renaissance. Look at World of Warcraft, look at the great games – Crytek with Crysis – there are a ton of great PC games.

WHAT? Hey, Peter, if you're going to give an example of hot-selling PC software, don't use Crysis, which is going console. Furthermore, yeah, no one is going to buy a Madden PC game if no one is making it. Furthermore, please, stop thinking you need to sell 3M copies of a title to be profitable. Just port the 360 DX9 version to the PC. It's easy, and will sell at least 200K copies.

I think your IQ really does drop 60 or 70 points when you join Electronic Arts - which must mean Will Wright started with an IQ of 230 before joining.
