Soccer>World's best defender, midfielder, forward?
chestnutz6 06:22 PM 06-26-2009
Based on the debate going on in the Confed Cup thread, I decided to start a whole new thread debating the best at each position.

Make a list, explain it, do whatever you want. [Reply]

Best Defender: I'd say either John Terry, or Carles Puyol. If I were building a team, I would start with these two guys in the CB role. Both are tremendous defenders with great strength, and both have the great ability to be on the field leaders.

Best Midfielder: This is tougher, as there are a ton of great midfielders. Depends if you define Ronaldo as a MD, but I don't. You don't score 42 goals in a season as a Mid. I see him more as a second striker, or a forward who plays wide. I think of midfielders as those who are great at recieving the ball and holding it and distributing it to the goalscorers. For that, I'd either say Iniesta based on last seasons play, or maybe even Messi. Messi is more a Mid than Ronaldo is in my eyes.

Best Stiker: Ronaldo or Torres. Torres is the more protoypical striker, who will get bags of goals for you. Ronaldo has the flair and deathly pace to beat you from any forward position. Can't go wrong with either. [Reply]

I agree with this one for sure. He is one of the best at knowing exatcly where the net is at all times. And he makes things look way too easy. [Reply]

Honestly, any list lacking Iniesta and/or Xavi is incomplete. Iniesta was probably the best player in the world for the better part of 4 months this past season and was the reason Barça played so well when he was in acting as a gel. [Reply]
