New to soccer games

I'm not a soccer fan but in the past I always liked played soccer video games. I used to play FIFA on Sega and PS1. Between FIFA 08 and PES 2008 which one has better franchise type modes. Does either one have an MLS league to play with etc...? which one has better game play? Thanks in advance

gosh this thread just screams flame war. not your fault, you didn't know. The PES/FIFA debate ignites as many arguments as the Madden/2K5 debate does, just so you know.

As far as franchise, they're called manager modes in these games. Both have extensive modes and both have positives and negatives. PES does not have many licensed teams though you can get them from a roster file download. I'm not sure any of them for PES 08 have MLS though. FIFA 08 has tons of leagues, including MLS.

As far as gameplay, they're different so perhaps download the demos and try for yourself. PES is faster but has greater control. You'll see more variance in games and in goals. FIFA is solid all the way around but leaves a little to be desired in receiving the ball, defense, and creative scoring. Can feel slow or bogged down at times, but to me the pace is spot on which makes it feel fun. PES at times, at least for me, felt like whoever could hold the turbo button the longest would probably win. Even the CPU was in non-stop sprint mode in PES.

I would say that I personally chose FIFA and loved it but honestly both games are great in their own regard. Manager mode in FIFA has a few broken things which I won't detail so as not to ruin it for you, but cool things you can do are play in leagues, domestic and European cups, scout players from all regions of the world, sign the players you want (as long as they agree to the transfer fee), pick a sponsor that gives you your salary for every match, etc.

But like I said, you'll just have to play them and figure out which one you like the best.

If you want to play MLS with a realistic manager mode, then FIFA is your choice. As far as gameplay it used to be PES without question, but now it's pretty much a toss up depending on how the games are this fall.

Re: New to soccer games

Thanks for the reply guys. From what you guys mentioned it looks like I'm leaning towards FIFA. I wont be doing online play so Manager mode is most important to me. I'll probably buy FIFA 08 (used) first and if I like it upgrade it to the newest one.

Re: New to soccer games

i would just like to agree with both posters, that FIFA is definitely the game for manager mode, particularly if you for MLS.

hovever, one reason that football is the best sports game right now is because of the extreme competition between the PES and FIFA dev teams. you could probably find "take down PES! (FIFA)" signs in each office. i mention this only because once you get on the crack that is football video gaming, it will not be long till you purchase PES. both are amazing games and will make for a fun october!

Re: New to soccer games

Both games have demos. You really need to try them and decide for yourself. Nobody can tell you which one you will like more.

Here in the US, many usually end up with both games anyway, as PES doesn't ship to the US until spring. So, usually we end up with Fifa in the fall and PES in the late spring.

If you want a good manager mode, play FM2008.

Re: New to soccer games

I'm also new to Futbol (soccer), a friend lent me FIFA '06 Road to the World cup, and for a game that came out in '05 - its a lot of fun. I'm a big dynasty player so I'm looking for a deep franchise mode. Can you play as any Italian team and do they have a good number of teams to chose from?

I would like to pick up FIFA '08, what do you guys think is a fair price for a used copy of the game? I would rather not pay over $50 for it since the new game comes out in a couple months. Also, what is EURO '08? Is the game only available in Europe?
