UEFA Champions League Thread 08/09

You may think i'm getting ahead of myself, but not only have the first legs of the 2nd round of Qualifiers been played, the draw for the 3rd round of qualifiers - where the big names start appearing, and perhaps start falling - is to be made later today at 12.00 Central European Time - LINK.

Seeded Teams
Liverpool
FC Barcelona
Arsenal
Schalke 04
Juventus
Rangers / Kaunas
Marseille
Steaua Bucharest
Panathinaikos / Dinamo Tblisi
Goteborg / FC Basel
Olympiacos
Fenerbahce / MTK Budapest
Shakhtar Donetsk
Anderlecht / BATE Borisov
Fiorentina
Spartak Moscow

Unseeded Teams
Atletico Madrid
FC Sheriff / Sparta Prague
Drogheda Utd / Dynamo Kyiv
Levski Sofia
Slavia Prague
Galatasaray
Inter Baki / Partizan Belgrade
Vitoria Guimaraes
Domzale / Dinamo Zagreb
Beitar Jerusalem / Wisla Krakow
Standard Liege
FC Twente
Tampere Utd / Artmedia Petržalka
Aalborg BK / FK Modriča
SK Brann / Ventspils
Anorthosis Famagusta FC / Rapid Vienna

Where teams are separated by a ' / ' it means that those teams are contesting a 2nd qualifying round matchup and the winners are to be decided.

As you can see, there some significant names in the unseeded half including Gala, Atletico and Dynamo Kyiv if they progress, so there is potential for a mouth-watering matchup before the group stage!

Steve McClaren's return to England should be fun.

Re: UEFA Champions League Thread 08/09

A couple of the 2nd round, return legs have already been played:

Kaunas 2-1 Rangers (Kaunas wins 2-1 on aggregate )
Ventspils 2-2 Brann (Brann win 2-2 on the away goals rule)

Those results affect the 3rd round matchups thusly:
Aalborg / Modrica v Kaunas
Brann v Marseille

So with the first matchup, we'll be guaranteed to see another 'new' team in the UCL proper this season, along with Romania's CFR Cluj, who qualified directly for the group stages.

The remaining 2nd legs will be played tomorrow. Keep an eye on it HERE.

Darn, now we won't be treated to more exciting European football from Rangers...

They'll be demoted to the UEFA Cup, joining the AC Milans of the world.

EDIT: Yep you're right...just read that UEFA Cup football is not a consolation prize if you lose in the second round, so Rangers are out for good already! My bad.
