My self imposed rules for manage only mode
I quickly discovered that it is too easy to rob the computer in trades, especially in multi player trades and by trading prospects for major leaguers.
First of all, I was looking for a National League team (old school, no DH) that hadn't won in a while and played in a ballpark that isn't a bandbox. I choose Pittsburgh. I use the fantasy draft function to draft the team I want.
I allow myself only two trades per season. The trades must be one player for one player only, and must be the same position. No starting pitcher for a reliever, no reliever for a closer, no center fielder for a right fielder, etc.
I do not allow myself to trade a minor leaguer for a major leaguer. The requirement is 200 at bats for a position player, 100 innings for a starting pitcher, 50 innings for a reliever or closer. That way, if you do trade a prospect for an established major league, you must put him in your lineup and suffer through the growing pains until he gets enough at bats or innings to be eligible for a trade.
Free agent signings count toward one of your two trades for the year, with the exception of resigning your own players. If you lose a player via free agency you can sign a free agent to replace him without having it count toward your trade total of 2 for the season.
Sliders are something I'm still working on. I leave everything on default exept for:
Umpire consistency I set to max.
Player contact I've gone back and forth with. On +2 it seems like most of my linuep is hitting .300 but on +1 the scores of the games are unrealistically low. So I currently have contact on +2 for both player and cpu.
Power is +2 for both player and cpu.
Error frequency I have at +7 but still there are few errors.
I tend not to sim games, and I play full seasons. Being retired, I have plenty of time. I play the game on a ps2, too cheap to spring for a ps3.
Welcome any comments.
