Shift 2: Unleashed Review (360)

Shift 2: Unleashed
drops the Need for Speed name, aggressive vs. precision points and collecting stars in favor of a more unified and sim-oriented experience. What remains is an exhilarating in-car experience surrounded by pretty basic options and features.

Gameplay

As a racer, Shift 2 captures the best of both racing game worlds. It shares the sense of speed and "edge of your seat" control with games like Hot Pursuit and Burnout. The racing is hyperkinetic, featuring outstanding visual effects that heighten the experience. The cars are appropriately overpowered, and the crashes bluntly visceral.

At the same time, it sticks to a pretty straight forward and realistic approach to driving, with actual cars and a ton of real and fictional tracks. Damage is brutal, and it tangibly changes your driving. You are rewarded, in a real and contextual sense, for clean driving, as opposed to knocking opponents off the track.

This is spot on. good writeup and the 7.5 is perfect for this one.

I agree with it but I'd have given it at least an 8.0 myself.

Seems that this game must play better on XBox. Amazon reviews for it are pretty good but not for PS3 version.

I've given up on racing games. For some reason, none seem to grasp my attention for more than a few hours. I remember when I used to play NFS U and NFS U2 nonstop on the PS2. good times

Too kind for a game that never learned the fundamentals before trying to get all flashy

Just got it and I'm surprised at all the negative reviews -- at least for the PS3 version. XBox version seems decent to me -- I kinda like it and would agree with around 4 of 5 stars. I did adjust my controller settings, though, based on a recommendation of a reviewer on Amazon.
