Split/Second Review

Split/Second is a pretty straightforward example of modern arcade racing. However, what separates it is the mighty good trick it has up its sleeve.

Split Second allows racers to trigger explosions and traps to destroy the competition. These triggered moments range from small-scale destruction such as blowing up a gas station or overturning a bus to large, route-altering chaos like blowing up a bridge or knocking over an air traffic control tower.

These destructive events, which are earned by drifting, drafting and evading other racers’ traps, are really the sole standout feature of Split Second. But these events tend to make every race play out differently, so it adds a lot more to the game than one might originally think. Plus, deciding whether to save up for the big, route-altering events or deciding instead to use a lot of little traps adds a needed element of strategy to the game.

Great review and I only disagree with the AI part. In pre-release reviews, I was concerned about that but after playing the demo then buying the game, I think it's very necessary for a game like this. It actually makes the game FUN, imo.
The air strike deals I can understand. They get REAL frustrating with how the copters will basically line the track from left to right with impassable missile markers that even if u slip past the missiles or slow down just in the "nick of time" avoiding a direct hit, the blast impact gets u something terrible.

Sound wise, I really like it, actually. The dramatic, movie soundtrack sounding music is pretty cool instead of some overdone techno ish. I don't really care about how the cars sound. It gets the job done.

I'd highly recommend this, as well. Great "re-imagining" of battle racing instead of that stale "get the power up then shoot/bomb/zip past the competitors" type game play.

Re: Split/Second Review

The rubber banding AI later in the game gets absolutely ridiculous. Hurts an overall great game.

Don't have the money to pitch out for this game right now. Got the chance to play the demo and I find it to be a pretty amazing game. Great graphics and even better destruction. Fantastic game. Definitely would recommend it. It's not your realistic type of racing game, but definitely a ton of fun.

Re: Split/Second Review

I've read reviewers state that the rubberbanding doesn't hurt the game as much as one might expect. I'd still say you should get it, it's well worth the money and I'll bet Extremegamer agrees despite what he said.

Re: Split/Second Review

It's a fun game. Just the AI kills enjoyment later on.

It's worth the $40 at Best Buy this week.

Re: Split/Second Review

From my understanding it's actually adaptable AI and you're better off picking a bad car or doing badly then trying again. Though it is really bad in the sense you can actually feel and see the difference when it's holding back your car and when it's not.
