Racing>Why don't they make better cars?

I'm not even sure this is the right section for this but playing Forza 3 I couldn't help but notice cases where a 1998 car was better than a 2005 car,I forget the exact manufacturer that raised the big flag but believe it was Tuscan. If technology advanced why didn't the cars? They obviously don't sell much with the cost but not even one that's better in 11 years? [Reply]

It may be better in terms of fuel efficiency and features not best suited for use in a racing car. My best guess anyhow. [Reply]

It's the product of two things. Money and limitations. Big brother keeps handing down new rules and regulations that the manufacturers have to adhere to for them to be able to sell their cars here. Once that is satisfied and done, the companies want to maximize profits. [Reply]

The catalytic converter is a perfect example. Introduce by the EPA in the 70's to reduce the toxic emissions from an engine. However, the catalytic converter requires a richer fuel mixture and burns it less efficiently - meaning you get worse fuel economy while consume more fossil fuel.

Look at this wonder car from the future that gets 43 mpg.

Now who would see this classic Grand Prix and ever think it was rated at 27 mpg / 20 mpg. The 2008 Grand Prix is only rated at 21 mpg. Some thirty years to gain 1 mpg?

Something telling in this ad though, if you read the print is says "Mileage and range estimates lower in California". That is because California regulations were already requiring that cars be equipped with catalytic converter before it was a National regulation.

So we maybe taking steps forward in car safety and environmental friendliness but they come at a cost- typically performance related. Top Gear also took an interesting look at electric cars. Not just how much they save in fuel but how much goes into building one and if you compare true environmental foot print to foot print it isn't much better than a combustion engine car.

Are you referring to the cars created by British sports car manufacturer TVR? The TVR Tuscon Speed 6 made its debut in 1999. However, the Cerbera Speed 12 was created around 1997-98 and is still ahead of its time in terms of performance. Reports say that the Cerbera Speed 12 is still one of the most difficult cars to drive on the planet.
