In other news, Tim Thomas [REDACTED - TOS VIOLATION] [REDACTED - TOS VIOLATION]

Where does everyone think Thomas is going to end up? If he's serious about sitting out the season, it really puts the Bruins in a bind, as his 5M salary will still count against the cap. Wonder if they'd consider trading him to a team that will difficulty reaching the cap floor.

I think he's just saying he might sit out a year because his NTC ends July 1st and he doesn't want on a team like CBJ or something.

He just announced on Facebook that he is indeed sitting out the season. If it's a tactic, it's a strange one, as Boston (or whoever they trade his rights to) could make Thomas play out the last year of his contract in 2013/14, so long as they're willing to take the 5M cap hit next season and 13/14. The Bruins won't do this, of course, but a low-budget team needing to hit the cap floor (COL, PHX, NYI) might. Doubt if Boston will get anything but a conditional pick for him, though.

I think if Boston wants to get rid of that cap number, they need to give a good prospect to just dump Thomas's cap. I don't know about NYI nor Phoenix, but Avs have no problems reaching the cap floor. They have 9 RFA, and I'm sure 7 of them is coming back for sure while Wilson and Porter are questionable.

Vokoun to the Pens for a 7th round pick..

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=397591

Bob McKenzie thinks the contract is pretty much done..

the Pens needed a back up, but im not sure how i feel about this.

In GMRS We Trust!!

watch Brent Johnson head back to the Capitals to finish his career..

edit - its official, he signed for 2 years at 2 million per.. a bit much for a back up, buuuut, they need to take a load off of MAF..

Re: The Official NHL 2012 Off-Season Thread

It was a good move for the Pens. I guess Vokoun really wants to win a ring, as he could have gotten much more money from a team who needed a goalie in free agency.

The Thomas situation is interesting. I think if you suspend him, you don't have to pay him, just deal with his cap hit. That would be glorious for a team with problems hitting the floor, trading for him essentially reduces the floor by 5 M.

Panthers have Jacob Markstrom coming up at some point. They'll probably stick with 1 year stopgaps if they want to delay his NHL debut. To think, Holland to McCollum over Markstrom and Voynov. We could have really used Voynov too, him and Smith could have easily slided into the top four with Sutart and Lidstrom leaving.

Michel Therrien back to coach the Montreal Canadiens. I can't believe it was back in 2003 when he was first fired by them. Success with PIT before being fired and replaced by Bylsma, who of course went on to win the Cup with the Penguins that season.
