Let the Burke Era begin (almost)

TSN article

Essentially it's going to be a 5 year deal worth $18 million. Burke will have complete autonomy and there's talk that there's performance based bonuses in the deal as well. Burke has yet to read or sign the deal but everything has been agreed upon.

He'll be officially announced no later then Saturday afternoon.

Seems weird that he can hop right into Toronto like this. He resigns and yet can sign with another team right away? I know that if a coach or player quit they couldn't just go to another team, you know?

The only reason he could do that is because the ducks are lame and just let him go.....Maple Leaf fans better hope he brings a salary cap specialist with him because he demolished the ducks on the way out....Be careful what you wish for Leaf fans....

I actully thinking he won't be good for the team.

As he will be pretty well demolish the team to fit his vision... size and toughness, which the leafs lack. So the only person I think is safe for now is Luke Schenn.

I'm not in favor of the Burke regime either. You know as well as I that he'll bring his own type of players in and surround himself with his own guys like Dave Nonis (bleh) to run the hockey operations. At least he'll make things interesting on the radio and TV airwaves.

If Burke tries to create a Western Conference team in Toronto, he's not that good of a GM.

SPTO: Dave Nonis was doing a great job in Vancouver before getting the 1 year shaft. He's the Canucks equivalent of Scott Howson (former Oiler assistant GM, current Blue Jackets GM), a cap specialist. Vancouver was nuts replacing a smart guy like him with Gillis.

As for Burke, he was meant for Toronto, the GM with the biggest ego in the city with the biggest ego. I personally hope the cup drought continues forever, but I do like Burkes get it done attitude and his gruff exterior, better than a guy who's always PC and never says what he thinks. But it will take 3-4 solid years of drafting and rebuilding with a couple free agent signings to get this team back into the playoffs as anything more than a borderline 8th place seed, something legitimate. Or, if they go the sign big name free agents route they might scrape in but won't be a cup challenger.

On the plus side with the cap to fall in 2 years by so much the Leafs are in great shape, unlike so many teams with guys locked up long term.

You know, personally I don't find there to be enough Burke news available, I would have thought this would have been a bigger story, not just in Toronto but on nation wide news outlets. Like TSN for example, I "only" found 14 Burke stories on the home page. For shame TSN, your coverage is sub par at best.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, **** Toronto and their media **** storm. You'd think they'd have just traded for Gretzky or something.

Donovan I know, as a Torontonian the coverage of Burke is even too much for me. No wonder TSN is call Toronto Sports Network outside of the GTA. It's kind of a sad spectacle to see the media rooting this hard for Burke.

I hope Burke flames out here.

Imagine if they had won the cup, how much coverage it would get. I looked around for an old cover from the Edmonton Sun the day after Gretzky was traded, it said something like, "Gretzky trade on pages 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,13,15,16,22,23,24,25,40,45 ,50,55,56,77,99 and back page"

It was what I thought of when I saw this.
