AHL Question

In the Transactions section of AHL.com it will say Signed to PTO or Released from PTO. What exactly is PTO? My guess would be Practice Try Out, but I honestly don't know.

Re: AHL Question

Close, it's Professional Try Out. They're usually for 10, 15 or 20 games if memory serves. Sometimes a veteran who has not generated any NHL interest will sign one to keep playing (Mark Parrish signed one with Bridgeport and was signed by Dallas before it expired), but you'll also see guys who finish out their college or junior seasons/careers sign them to play in the AHL playoffs.

I guess the advantage to the player is that he can play for the team, but that he is not tied to the team/parent organization. For instance, Parrish signed with Bridgeport, who are the Islanders AHL affiliate, but was offered an NHL contract by Dallas and quickly (and understandably jumped ship). The disadvantage is that it is not guaranteed to lead to anything and I imagine that they don't pay much but I'm not too informed on the latter...
