Maybe someone can help me...

I'm looking for the name of a player the Blackhawks signed / traded for in the early 2000s. He was a big name who had never met his ultimate potential, and he was also a head case. I think he got into a lot of fights, was suspended maybe. But he was definitely a big name.

Does anyone know who I'm talking about? I've tried looking at the Blackhawks transaction histories, and I can't find him.

Give me a little help on his position, whether he was a Hawks draft pick or not, and I can get this for you.

Looking at the 2000-2002 rosters the only names that jump out at me are Mark Bell, who was a good young player for a couple seasons and was dealt to SJ and Toronto before busting. And Kyle Calder who now plays for the LA Kings but was a bust for his career. Both were scrappy players to some extent and didnt pan out.

I'm thinking it could be Mark Bell because he talks about potential. Theo Fleury came to Chicago with a reputation already and the main reason he flamed out is because his alcoholism caught up to him so it wasn't like he was some crazy nutjob.

Tyler Arnason comes to mind. Bob Probert was also hanging around with the Hawks in the early 00's. But the OP must be referring to Fleury if he's certain that the player in question was a "big name".

Re: Maybe someone can help me...

The reason I dont think of Fleury is that he did meet his potential, he was a ppg player in his career and two time 100 point scorer. Maybe he could have had a couple more good years if it wasn't for his substance abuse problem, but he certainly wasnt a bust in his career. Neither was Probert, in the early 2000s he was getting old but will always be mentioned among the games great enforcers.

Arnason is a candidate however.

Maybe he's thinking of Eric Daze? Though I guess he wasn't signed or traded for. He was drafted into the organization. So then I have no idea.

Eric Daze definitely wasnt a head case though, as far as I recall.

Anyway, enough speculating on my part, OP should give an update if a name struck a chord with him.

Daze was a helluva player, he just had issues with his back. Its nothing to fault him for, he played his *** off when he was healthy.
