If the reason for this is truly to "sell hockey in Tampa", then the Lightning should have their franchise revoked. Winning a Stanley Cup 4 years ago isn't enough? FAIL.

I thought Tampa had been filling the building ever since their win. But agreed will this really sell the game? Do Tampa fans really know who Barry Melrose is? And do they see him as an actual reason to go to a game?

The Lightning sold out the building the two years after the cup win and were at about 95 percent capacity last season (just above Detroit) so the market isn't a problem. I just think the new owner wants to make a splash and this is the wrong way to go about it. Melrose won't sell tickets, a winning hockey club will.

First off,

Congrats Doc on the new job!

Ok back to the topic, I've heard the new Tampa owners want to be a sideshow in the mold of Mark Cuban so get used to antics like this. The market is actually pretty good there. The Lightning don't get much press in the local media but there is a sizable fanbase that do go to the games.

I have a feeling that Melrose will utterly fail at this job. 13 years is a long lay off between coaching jobs and the culture of the league has changed a lot since then.

Melrose is fine. Problem with hockey is you have too many cookie cutter, mundane drones bringing us the action. I don't see him giving up his sweet gigs and exchanging it for the headaches of coaching a wobbly franchise.

Lots of people would fail in Tampa. Forsaking defense and goaltending is a recipe for disaster.

They really need Smith or Ramo to become a stud.
