Don Cherry joins ESPN

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playof...ory?id=3384071

He's not leaving CBC though.

Now he can take his French/Euro/Visor bashing South of the Border.

I feel sorry for the person that has to reign Cherry in when he gets out of hand LOL

He should re-do his "stick love" segment for the U.S. audience.

I was a casual hockey fan before the lockout, pretty much just watching playoff hockey then. Anyway who is this guy?

That little clip was just odd.

Cherry has been on US TV before and well let's just say his brand of commentary hasn't translated well. Anyways he's best known as the coach of the "Big Bad Bruins" of the '70s, has a mad man crush on Bobby Orr, doesn't particularly like Euro players (however that stance has softened in recent years) and is a champion of hockey tough guys and goonery.

Having said that however, he's still a great ambassador for the game because he's been so outspoken about it and is generally on the ball when it comes to major events in the game. He is also deeply patriotic on the outside (which is rare for Canadians) and gives tremendous support to our troops in Afghanistan. He's just a real flamboyant and great supporter of the game and a great guy.

To those unfamiliar with Don Cherry, he's Canada's resident hockey sage/buffoon. As a hockey commentator, he's mediocre. As a showman, he's top-notch. Whether or not you agree (or even understand) with his rantings, he's must-see TV.

Ah, I think Cherry knows more then he lets on. He just dumbs himself down to get more notoriety. If you've heard his hour long call in shows on the Fan radio network from time to time he's actually quite knowledgeable.

In many ways he's a cross between Howard Cossell and Dick Vitale.

I'm quite sure Cherry won't say anything that'd provoke our neighbours down south.. he knows his audience, he's talked on US broadcasts before, I'm sure he knows when to draw the line.

Wow, ESPN is starting to care about hockey all of a sudden? They interviewed Crosby on ESPN radio too.

Maybe the ratings on their Poker coverage are down and they are warming up to the idea of it coming back to their network?
