2008 - The year of the safety?

The Vikings recorded two safties in a single quarter last week, which is eye opening enough, but it seems like we are seeing an increased amount of these 2 point plays across the league. The Steelers just recorded one against the Chargers just as I started this thread in fact.

EDIT - The Raiders also recorded a safety earlier today against the Dolphins.

Did you know the LA Rams recorded not one but THREE safeties in one game? I believe it was in 1978.

There were actually a fair amount of safeties recorded in the late '70s early '80s.

I agree, same in college too.

In fact, my theory is that every weekend someone will have exactly 2 points at some point in the game. Pretty sure its held up each time.

Ravens have two on the year. Might be three.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed. I remember around ten years ago or so it was so rare to see a safety in the NFL that when you saw one you definitely remembered it for a while. Now it seems like we are seeing one or two each week and it has become hard to keep track of them all!

Teams like the think sitting back in Shotgun is a good idea. THe more and more teams spread things out the more and more negative plays increase....just the way football is.

Doesn't help with JV quarterbacks running out of bounds.

Re: 2008 - The year of the safety?

I attended an Iowa Penn St game in 2004 where the final score was 6-4 Iowa. Up 6-2 late in the 4th, Iowa took an intentional safety to gain field position because they know PSU's offense wouldn't be able to get into field goal range...

It was a wise decision on that day...

Re: 2008 - The year of the safety?

I just thought of something. Now that there is a rule in place that if a team gets called for offensive holding in the end zone the defensive team gets a safety. When did that rule come into effect? That probably has something to do with the influx of them as of late, well, in pro football anyway.

Re: 2008 - The year of the safety?

I just did some research and thus far there have been 16 safties recorded in the NFL thus far. Minnesota leads the league with three, followed by Baltimore, Oakland and the Giants who each have two. Miami, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Chicago, San Diego and Detroit have each recorded on safety as well.
