That name would make sense if it was the Knoxville Grizzlies, what with the Smoky Mountains and all...but I'm pretty sure there aren't any mountains or bears in Memphis.

Almost as bad as Ole Miss changing their mascot from the rebel to the black bear.

Pretty sure all (if not 99.9%) names meant something to the original city a team was formed in.

I remember Baltimore's first Arena team went nameless bc they couldn't keep the Colts after they snuck off to Indy. Nobody cares about lower level arena teams (nobody did then either) but it was funny watching the local sports news and seeing "Baltimore ??? undefeated".

I still think "Wizards" is worse...I just envision a bunch of acne-riddled geeks in pointy hats with moons and stars on it. I know it's not politically correct, but the Bullets is so much a better name...

Problem is that name was dumb too. The Baltimore Bullets got the name from a shoe that was made in the area. A shoe... and bc it sounded good. The Washington Bullets was really as much of a disconnect as the Utah Jazz. The major difference being people know what jazz is, and can pretty quickly realize there's just a bad match between that in Utah. Associating the Bullets name to crime in the DC area (and the Baltimore area) is much easier.

Outside of the history of the franchise actually being good, I had no problem with the name change. It was just the choice of the name that was horrible. Seemed like they wanted to go as far as possible away from "Bullets" which brings more attention to the assumption that the team's name came from the association to crime in the area. They just screwed up the entire process. I'm glad they brought the colors back.

BTW, on topic, everything about the Charlotte Hornets was right. The name had an NBA feel but also an appeal to the heavy college bball contingency down there. Same with the color scheme, and it was definitely hot nationally. The personalities and types of players they had through the years seemed to help too. There was just a weird connection with everything.

Nope, that honor goes to Indiana. (or at least did for a long while)

I'd like something like this.....but more of a UNC blue...

Better font too
I like the first one too. It would resemble Air Jordan 1's symbol. Flight would make sense for the state and for its owner.

Well, learn something new each day. I didn't know that the name came from a shoe. Thanks for the cool factoid of the day.

Nevertheless, I think the Bullets is a cool name. It seems fast, aggressive, simple - everyone knows what a bullet is. And they had that semi-Bullet-Bill logo and the red-white-blue color scheme (which thankfully is back). I just think any name is better than the Wizards...
