Re: NBA Off Topic

I linked this in the 2K forum, but felt it also deserved a link here too. A great interview with Charles Barkley on the radio here in Chicago that touches on a few different topics. Charles is really one of my favorite guys ever.

To Shawn's defense (since he's a Sixer ) -- every good/great shotblocker gets yammed on a lot.

Earl Smith III.

Favorite quote is from his father:

Quote:
"Defense was the last thing I taught them," Earl explained, "because you can make it without defense."
Second favorite quote, concerning KG

Quote:
That opened the door for Garnett in 1995, then a superior high school player but someone described by Michael Wilbon in the Washington Post as not "physically ready to play under the basket in the Big Ten, much less against Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson. His skill level isn't high enough; he isn't savvy enough."

Re: NBA Off Topic

Pops is right though but I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But as long as he can be "more hot than cold" with the 3pt shot, he'll always have a job in the NBA(despite his lack of Defense) until he's done.

Didn't really read the rest but skimmed thru and this quote stuck out to me:

Quote:
But he's also defined by something that isn't tangible: untapped potential. Eight years into his star-crossed career, coaches and fans still don't know what to make of J.R. Smith.
I think it's safe to say that the J.R we see now is most likely the J.R we'll see for the rest of his career. Don't really see him turning into a 20-25 PPG scorer or being anymore than a #3 or #4 guy on a team.

Re: NBA Off Topic

Earl is a role player at best, but I would take him on my team.

I just read the whole piece.

Quote:
"Talent-wise," said Benjamin Hochman, "J.R. Smith should be better than J.R. Smith."
The last line of the article does say it all. I don't think his dad really saw his true potential. He knew that he had NBA talent, and taught him enough to help him get there, but he didn't see that J.R. had the physical gifts to be an NBA all-time great.

Defense and all the intangibles that pops downplayed would have gotten him to that Superstar level that he should be at. He should be battling Wade for All NBA first team SG by now, muscling Kobe off of that stage. You could see in the article though, that his Dad, who doesn't seem to be a bad guy, didn't have that wisdom to impart to his son.
