The Bulls have been using bench players Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon to finish off games, choosing to sit No. 1 overall pick Derrick Rose. "Rose is fairly predictable," said one scout. "When he wants to get his own offense, he goes for it. When he wants to look for other guys, he does that. The great point guards keep you guessing."

Are you kidding me? Is this suppose to be some kind of break through analysis? Of course he'll be predictable, he's a rookie! After scouting him his whole college and high school career, I'm hoping scouts would know what he's going to do. He's only played 7 freakin games! Yes, the great point guards keep you guessing BUT HE AIN'T THERE YET!

I'd like to know the name of this scout and what team he scouts for. Because if he thinks that this is groundbreaking news then we seriously need to question his credentials.

Scouting reports are useless. I remember in college having scouting reports of the pitchers from other teams.

Can't believe people get paid for this stuff.

How can you make a statement like this?

Knowing your opponent is KEY in any sport. Don't see how it is USELESS.

No people aren't prophets when it comes to knowing what your opponent WILL do, but knowing the general tendencies again is key and having a GENERAL idea as to what your opponent MOST LIKELY will do CAN be a key factor when you finally face that opponent

And I UNDERSTAND what this scout is saying. He is speaking of reading Derrick Rose as he is bringing the ball up court. Reading his face, eye positioning, body language. He is simply saying you KNOW when Rose is going to GO and you KNOW when he isn't

Re: Scout: Rose has rookie flaw

I think the scout is bringing up a valid point but because he makes it so simplistic it's being passed off as useless.

If a scout is letting his team know, "Hey, just look at the guy and you know what he's going to do," then that team has an advantage on defense. It changes their positioning and aggressiveness on him and his other Bulls teammates.

Yes, he's a rookie, but it's a flaw no matter if he's a rookie. According to this scout, Rose needs to do a better job of covering up his intentions. And the reason why it matters so much right now is because rookies tend to over-think everything. If he's out there over-thinking and showing his intentions, then you immediately put Rose in a tough spot if you are aware of this report.

That being said, Rose is a future star and has shown an ability to be one.

If this is his biggest flaw then the Bulls should be happy because with time Rose will learn to hide his intentions.

What's funny is that MLB teams use extensive scouting reports and players use it to know what pitchers throw in certain situations, what the hot spots are for batters, if someone's hot, etc. As time goes on they just keep pushing cash into this, it's not going away.

Re: Scout: Rose has rookie flaw

Listen, if a scout cannot dissect a rookie's flaws then he doesn't need to be a scout. Every rookie coming into the league has flaws. It's part of their maturation. Jordan had his flaws coming into the league. Remember how he couldn't stick a jumpshot more than 15 feet away from the basket? But as the years went on, he eliminated those flaws and became the player we all know.

Rose is in the same boat with every other potential great player. He'll know his flaws and when the off season comes around he'll work on it. Every great player had to go through this. I don't think there has been a player in history that came in his first season as the 'Complete Package'. Rose has got a lot of work ahead of him to reach that upper echelon of PG's besides working on his ability to learn when to pass and shoot. He's also got to hit that jumpshot consistently. The fact of the matter is, he seems like he has the physical abilities and mental makeup of becoming a great PG. It's all up to him if he wants to or not.

Now if this scout came in with some analysis of how he doesn't listen to his coach. Or he's arguing with his veteran teammates. Or he's on the bench talking on his cell phone then these are things we would have to worry about beyond his rookie season. Other than that, that scout gave no ground breaking analysis on his current game.

Huh?

You rather that a scout give his team a report on a player's attitude on the bench and with his coach? What kind of scouting is that? It has nothing to do with his ability to play.

The scouts report on Rose showcasing his next move is a breaking analysis of his current game because it has to do with his game. And it's a pretty big deal if a defender can read a player by just looking at his body language.

But, you rather that the defender know that Rose doesn't listen to his coach or likes calling his friends during practice?

Re: Scout: Rose has rookie flaw

Didn't hit the link. But from the quote, I don't get the anger here. The scout is paid to give an honest, correct assesment, not criticism. Did he lie anywhere? Was his report overly harsh? No. The scout did his job. He'll change it as & when Rose improves.
