Worst playoffs in recent memory

Assuming the Yankees win tomorrow, this will go down as arguably the most boring postseason in baseball history. For only the second time since the playoffs were expanded, no division series went to five games and neither championship series or the World Series went to seven games. On top of that, no World Series since 2003 has gone more than five games.

Next year, I hope we have another seven game epic for the Series like in 2001 but I highly doubt it.

Re: Worst playoffs in recent memory

You clearly havent watched the games

sure none of the series have gone the distance, but if you've watched the games you would have seen that virtually every game has been extremely close and entertaining

the final results of the series have not represented the quality of the games

Re: Worst playoffs in recent memory

Your opinion is yours to keep and that is how you feel about these playoffs. Just because a series does not go the distance does not mean it was terrible. Teams go into slumps but if you told me at the beginning of season that the Yankees, loaded with talent throughout their roster, and Phillies, also loaded top-to-bottom, were going to be battling for the World Series, it would be hard to say that it would not be a great match-up to conclude the season.

Of course, the Phillies did not come in as a wild-card team going up against the 1998 Yankees. Even if MLB had the two divisions and only one team allowed from each division, there is a good chance that this season we would see the Phillies and Yankees, so I think that point is invalid in trying to explain why this would be the worst playoffs in recent memory.

Remember, even the best teams can lay an egg in a series to the worst teams, the playoffs are not exempt from this occurring. Hitting or pitching goes cold for a team and they are in a world of trouble.

I have enjoyed this series and this one has probably drawn the most interest from me since the 2001 World Series between the Yankees and Diamondbacks.

Yankees keep winning = best playoffs in recent memory, my bottomline.

I'm probably biased and I admit it would be hard for me to know how I would feel if the results were the other way around, but the Yankees vs. Twins/Angels series were both very good. Lots of extra inning games, tight situations, close scores.

Totally agree. Not to mention last night's WS Game...

Wholeheartedly agree with the posts in this thread. Just because none of the series have gone long doesn't mean that its been boring. In fact, I'd say its been one of the more exciting in recent memory. Most games have been tight, very tight. Some of the games this postseason have been epic!

The only thing bad about the playoffs this year has been the umpiring.

While the length of the series have been disappointing the games for the most part have been quite good. You also add in the fact that there's been tons of controversy with the umpires and it makes for great theatre.

Re: Worst playoffs in recent memory

Every year someone posts this about the NFL/NBA/MLB playoffs. I have enjoyed these playoffs. Really, the only ones I haven't enjoyed recently were 2007...the Rockies/Red Sox was just too much a foregone conclusion.

Re: Worst playoffs in recent memory

The games have been great, yes, but for me the reason I love the MLB Playoffs more than any other sport's is the atmosphere of a Game 7. The way the crowd lives and dies with every pitch. The pressure of it all. There's really nothing like it in sports. That's why i've been a little disappointed this year. Great games, sure, but nothing compares to a Game 7 in my mind.
