Did he ever announce his retirement?, no.
Is he retired?, for all intents and purposes, yes. [Reply]

No, he instead chose getting hurt in international play as a career hobby.

I'm still upset that the Yankees dropped him after a productive year for a 4th outfielder. But, he was also my favorite player growing up so I'm admittedly biased toward him. [Reply]

Same here.
Miss him.
I bet if he was a Hall of Fame shoe =-in, he'd have retired by now.
:-)

Well, no one's worn his 51. And I think it'll stay that way as long as Jeter, Rivera, Posada and/or Pettitte are around.

The Yankees are obviously planning something, but I think they are waiting on the names above to hang them up first. I think this is also why they haven't done anything with O'Neill's 21. And that's probably a new idea as they obviously didn't realize how sentimental it was to the fans until LaTroy Hawkins threw a target on his back for the first few weeks of 2008.

It's getting awfully thin in Yankees world.

2-Jeter
6-Torre
13-A. Rodriguez
20-Posada
21-O'Neill
42-Rivera
46-Pettitte
51-B. Williams

I'm fairly certain that by 2020 all of those numbers will be retired by the Yankees. That's a lot of numbers no one will ever wear again. But, I think it'll be extremely difficult to argue against 2, 6, 20 and 42. The others will be tougher, but I don't think anyone can wear 21, 46 and 51 without getting a big fuss from the fans. Also, I'm certain that 13 will be there once Alex Rodriguez finishes his big league career as arguably one of the top 10 players of all-time having spent a large portion of his career in New York. You think Posada will be a bigger deal than Pettitte? I dunno man. [Reply]
Sandman42 11:53 PM 10-20-2009
I'd say so. Even for playing during the Yankees dynasty its amazing how underrated Posada has been throughout his career. Pettitte's been a great big game pitcher for them, but not many catchers in the history of the game have put up the numbers Posada has behind the plate. [Reply]

Yeah definitely not diminishing Jorge, but Pettitte is a definite automatic too, I think. Could it be that he pitched in Houston for a couple of years? [Reply]
