Maddux likely to retire

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...2008&fext=.jsp

Quote:
Dodgers right-hander Greg Maddux intends to retire from Major League Baseball, his agent, Scott Boras, said on Tuesday as the first official day of the General Managers Meetings began to wind down.

If it comes to pass, Maddux will go out with 355 career regular-season victories, one more than Roger Clemens, who hasn't officially retired but didn't pitch this past season as he dealt with various legal issues regarding his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.

"I talked to Greg at the end of the season, and he said at this point, his intentions are not to play next year," Boras told a group of writers gathered around him.
Easily a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Well that sucks, but Greg has certainly earned the right to step away on his own terms.

Great career from just an amazing pitcher!

Re: Maddux likely to retire

Honestly maybe it is time for Maddux to walk away. Last season he seemed to pitch better for a lousy Padres team than a good Dodgers team. Limiting himself to only wanting to play on the west coast (or Milwaukee, but probably not anymore now that his brother is no longer pitching coach there) was probably going to force him into retirement anyway unless the Dodgers wanted to take him back.

Maddux has done everything he could possibly ever do as a major league ball player. He did win his 18th Gold Glove today, not exactly another World Series ring but it's probably better than a gold watch.

With as great of a student of the game as Maddux is i wonder if we will ever see him come back as a pitching coach or manager some day.

I hope that MLB does something special for this guy, who was my pitching hero growing up. The guy has been a consumate professional throughout his career and one of the best pitchers of all times. With what he had to work with as far as velocity goes, the numbers he put up have been amazing. If he decides to step away from the game, I truelly hope MLB gives him a proper send off.

Greg Maddux is one of those guys who maximized what little he had in "stuff". He was the ultimate pitcher IMO. I hope that in a few years we'll see him in a dugout somewhere as a pitching coach because I think he has a ton of knowledge and experience he can impart to pitchers today.

Re: Maddux likely to retire

Maddux was and still is a great pitcher on and off the field, would love to see Maddux as a pitching coach for the Braves.
Thankyou Greg!

Re: Maddux likely to retire

My favorite pitcher and the guy I looked up to while growing up.. sad to see him go if he follows through with it. Looks like Smoltz, Maddux and Glavine might go in together if they all call it quits this offseason

Glad I got to see Maddux this summer

I'd give my right arm to be the fourth member of their golf foursome one time.

I dont think you would have a very good golf stroke with one arm.

Re: Maddux likely to retire

It's understandable if he walks from the game, he's been in it for quite the long haul now.

It's just sad that my favorite hitter and pitcher will both seemingly not be playing next year, though.
