Final Four: Tecmo Super Bowl vs. College Hoops 2k8

I consider the Tecmo bowl games the most overrated sports series ever. I'm stunned anyone over 10 would consider it anywhere close to College Hoops let alone better. In my opinion there are at least a dozen football games alone better then any Tecmo game.

I could see someone saying NFL 2k5 is better than College Hoops, or even Front Page Sports Pro, but Tecmo? Its beyond ridiculous.

I am 28 and voted for College Hoops 2K8. I played TSB like everyone else my age and it was phenomenal. But I'll try to defend my vote.

It's impossible to compare different eras of gaming. It's like trying to claim Babe Ruth is the greatest baseball player ever. While he was miles ahead of everyone in his time, he was never trained the way athletes are today, nor had to compete against African Americans. Baseball was also not the global sport it is today.

That's how I look at this matchup. Tecmo Super Bowl is Babe Ruth. Probably the most important sports game ever made. But it also came out in an era with low expectations and not much competition. If this was a vote for most important, revolutionary or most innovative sports game of all time, this would clearly win.

But the tourney is for best sports game. Right now I feel College Hoops 2K8 is the best sports game that has been made. It has near flawless gameplay to go with great graphics. The sheer amount of options inside a Dynasty mode can lend to playing this game for years. While I played Tecmo Super Bowl till I was blue in the face, I probably have played College Hoops 2K8 more. With March Madness being the only college game next year, and their track record for making garbage, I have a feeling many of us will be playing this game for years.

And like I said, this is an impossible question. It's asking who's the greatest baseball player of all time. Most would say Ruth, but I believe if you put Alex Rodriguez in his current form back in that era, he obliterates everything Ruth ever did. Tecmo Super Bowl is the game that revolutionized sports gaming, but it's not the best game that has ever been made. There is a big difference in the two.

I'm 37 and have been a sports video game junkie for probably the same amount of time as yourself. As I said earlier, to each his own, simply because at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference as it relates to what someone likes or dislikes. I have a current legacy going right now in CH2K8, and still feel that the game is overrated to some degree. I actually think that CH2K7 played a better game of basketball than 2K8, however, neither of those can touch NBA 2K8 IMO...that is probably the most complete basketball game I've ever played to date. Again it's strictly personal preference.

But someone tried to use the Babe Ruth analogy to legitimize this argument which I think is unfair. Decades after his death, love him or hate him, he's still revered as arguably the best ever. I feel the same distinction should be given to TSB. For what that game was able to bring to the table was just unheard of. Forget the graphics, TSB set a benchmark for everything we enjoy in football gaming today.

CH is a good game, not great by any means. I've been playing this series since 05 and have yet to see this jaw-dropping, awe-stricken fascination many have for CH2K8. I say this and I'm about 4 years into my legacy. The game is good, but this game should not be held in the same high esteem as TSB.

Back to the Babe Ruth type analogy, I'll put it in basketball terms to compare these 2 games....Lebron may be the hottest thing going right now in the minds of many, but to stack him up against Jordan as the greatest ever is no contest, a shutout, a blowout....much like this comparison should be between TSB and CH2K8.
