Looking Ahead - The 2010 Offseason

Folks,

The good people over at DigitalSportsPage.com have come up with a wonderful system that we'll be using as a basis for our upcoming offseason free agency.

Basically, each team has a salary cap of 10 points for the season. That 10 point cap will run from offseason to offseason.

Before the NFL Draft, each team will release 1 80+ overall rated player, 1 70-79 overall rated player, and 2 60-69 overall rated players. We will then begin the process of FA bidding. You have 10 points to use for the offseason and the ENTIRE upcoming regular season, so you'll have to bid wisely.

Example - if you bid all 10 points on one player and during the season you suffer an injury, you'd have to cut a guy to get 1 point back, then you could sign a guy for 1 point.

Simple enough, right?

When I open the bidding for Free Agents, the process will go like this:

Let's say Chase of the Rams wants to bid on Terrell Owens. He'd start a thread, in the Owners Only Forum, titled "WR Terrell Owens", and the first post would say:

Rams bid 2 points on WR Terrell Owens

That starts a 24-hour clock to outbid Chase for that player. If 24 hours pass and no one outbids him, he gets the player. If he is outbid, he (or anyone else) has 24 hours to raise that bid, otherwise that player will go to the team that outbid him.

The offseason FA process will last as long as it needs to. Once 24 hours passes without a single bid, we'll move on.

At that point, we'll have the NFL Draft. Once the draft is complete, the same rules will apply for any remaining available free agents. 24 hours to outbid another team, etc, etc, etc.

This brings us to our next question...what about the CPU teams?

The CPU teams will all be left alone...completely. I have no desire to try to help them figure out who to release, who to sign, or any of that. Therefore, the CPU teams will be totally and completely managed by the CPU. Which means they won't have the manditory release rule that the rest of us will have.

I'm not going to open this up for suggestion or debate, as I've seen this work quite well with my own eyes over at DSP. This is the way it is going to be.

So go ahead and start thinking about who you'd like to release...of course, we'll wait until after the offseason progression runs before setting a deadline to submit the players to cut.

Any questions?

Sounds good to me. Will you post who has been bid on what the bid is? Will you show what team that placed the bid or leave that out?

What is the trade window for the offseason? At any time after the superbowl completes?

LOL, yes, the minute the Super Bowl is over, you may resume trading.

Ok, changed it to 80+ for manditory release. I'm sticking with that number...there will still be plenty of good players available but it won't cripple teams with crappy rosters.

Re: Looking Ahead - The 2010 Offseason

Also I assume kickers cannot be used to meet the mandatory waiving requirement? Hopefully...

Special teams guys and players that would put you below the minimum roster requirement are disallowed, correct.
