I'm not really sure how this works...When I start a season and send down a few players to the minors and call up a couple guys with bigger contracts it says my cap is now at -2.70 mil. I assume this is because minor league contracts don't count towards the cap or budget?
My next question is, if I'm above the cap/budget by 2 mil how come I'm able to play games without a warning "must fix cap room before proceeding" or something of the sort? Does it only affect whether or not I can sign free agents? Also I've traded for players that put me above the cap without any "warning" to not allow me to proceed. Thanks for your help!

I can't speak for how it works in the game but in real life the cap is not applied to your total contracts but rather total money spent at the end of the year for players that were "active" (either scratched or dressed) with the team. So guys' salaries don't count while they're injured or when they're sent down to the minors. Similarly if you trade a 5 million dollar guy midway through the season for a prospect, he still counts 2.5 million on your cap since you've already paid him that.
