The Biggest Elephant inn The Room - Ineffective Player Ratings

Let me preface my remarks by stating I'm older than the hills and have been playing football video games since Intellivision. I ain't new to the party.

IMHO the core of many of the flaws of video game football, at least specifically EA titles like NCAA 13, is that the very detailed player ratings simply have very little impact on gameplay at MANY positions.

Yes, they make a difference at QB. Past that, it's less clear. After all these years, I would have hoped that this core issue would have been addressed, but IMHO it still has NOT.

I will give you one small case in point as Exhibit A to open the discussion. I created a monster DT as a recruiting prospect - a 400 lb, 6'2" behemoth with 90+ attributes in EVERY category that had anything to do with DL play. I hoped to sign the guy to my current Miami team but he signed with 'Bama.

So I scheduled my first game the next season against the Crimson Tide to observe this monster's dominance. To be fair I set the play to CPU versus CPU.

His line? 4 tackles, 1 sack in 9 minute quarters on Varsity.

Let me note, that my testing would indicate sliders do NOT affect CPU versus CPU games AT ALL. They apparently run on their own little code.

But that DT should have DOMINATED and he wasn't even noticeable in the game.

Discuss.

Re: The Biggest Elephant inn The Room - Ineffective Player Ratings

Superstars, especially on defense, have been hardly noticeable for a long time. The only time I ever seemed to particularly point out a defensive player is when I play someone else and they have a good CB. MLB have almost always been invisible. Guys in Madden like Patrick Willis are hardly noticeable. Pass rushers who are dominant on the edge never seem to have that sort of impact. A guy who can get 6-8 pressures a game doesn't exist. Usually, it appears to be the DT's, regardless of ratings, who get more pressure, and even then they seem to do better because the animations suck and the blocks magically stop. The only noticeable attribute in the game is speed, when there is a ton more in the game than that. A guy like Rob Gronkowski isn't the fastest guy but he has great hands, can jump, and uses his body to his advantage. Players like this play nothing like their real life counterpart. They simple take advantage of crappy defense and dominant slot/TE/RB that has existed since Madden 10. Outside receivers rarely have any value unless slot/curl/streak. Feel like their value is limited outside of those routes, and slot guys tend to be pretty open pretty often.

All in all, all I want is players to play too their ratings and too their real life game play style. The games play pretty bad when you can be supremely accurate with Tom Brady or Dave Rettig from Boston College. The game plays bad when route running means nothing and players catch anything thrown their way.

Its bad bro.

There is a herd of elephants in the room and a few 800 lb gorillas....

The safety play is horrendous on higher levels actually making the game easier on Heisman than on varsity.

The QB accuracy slider doesn't work.

The sime engine is all fouled up causing top 10 teams to lose to terrible teams.

The AI play calling

Punts that always bounce like a superball 20 yards if they land inside the 10

FG accuracy slider is frogged up

Penalty sliders do not work. Haven't seen a clipping call even with the slider at 100.

Pretty bad effort this year by EA. This franchise is circling the drain.

Re: The Biggest Elephant inn The Room - Ineffective Player Ratings

Before this gets closed....I have to agree. For me, I am just like "Old School"...just turned 50. I have made roster sets mainly for my own use, put did post a few last year. You can make a 40 overall offensive/defensive lineman in the game and he can hold his own. You can put a WR/RB/QB on the OL...and still get the same results. Yes...he might get beat a few times, but should never be average.

I guess this is why I have given up on the "rosters" rating. Just seems like to much work, and not enought return. Most of the ratings are useless, and they have gone overboard with so many.

I've always been big on rerating rosters, and loved the results.
This version I have only been focusing on physical attributes, plus some awareness, and still see solid change on the field. I feel sliders do a good job handling the mental attribute adjustments I desire.
Strength is a good one to produce more fluid collision animations.
Using acceleration to seperate the taller long-striding players from the shorter quick burst players.
From my games, I like what I see.

That's the big one my friend, the big one. If you use one main xbox roster file out there, all the players have a higher acceleration than speed rating so every player runs and feels the same. Thankfully a friend and I will be releasing a roster file in the next two weeks for people who want the players to play and feel different from each other. We have also gone through and re-rated all the QB's THP and THA ratings to truly reflect what we see every Saturday among many other major rating re-edits.

Re: The Biggest Elephant inn The Room - Ineffective Player Ratings

You're missing my point please look at the example in my OP and tell me how you workaround something like that? Again SOME positions play to certain ratings, MOST do not.
