The screen is made of black-out cloth (drapery material - cost me about $25), stretched on a frame that I built myself for under $30. It is actually masked on the sides to make a 16:9 HDTV screen that is 106" diagonal - which is used for TV, PC and Gaming; but the side masks can come down to make a 2.35-1 Aspect Ratio screen for movies that expands to 125" diagonal (and has the added benefit of removing those damn black bars when watching movies).

Now, whenever I feel like playing, I do it on a nice 106" screen in a light-controlled man cave complete with mini-fridge and 7.1 surround sound and Aura Bass Shakers in the seats...brings a whole new meaning to "immersion"!

A couple gratuitous screenshots/eye candy:

Amazing.

Re: how to convince people to watch you play

I almost pulled the trigger on this little over a year ago. The fiance' was completely in on it and all I had to do was rearrange the man cave. I ended up holding off after having some restraints about the "light control" issues. I am not sure I want to play in the dark everytime. Also heard issues with the washed out look and not having that vibrant pop of colors like a LCD.

What is the lumens of your projector? How dark does the room have to be?

I have this projector:

Its an Epson PowerLite 8100 that I got for ~$750 (delivered) from an online clearance sale; 1080p native LCD with I believe 1500 Lumens and I can play it with room lights on (I installed rope lighting that runs along the ceiling and prevents the on-screen from washing out too much...its definitely better with the lights off, but its entirely possible to game or watch TV with the ceiling lights on too).

The projector on the top is my older unit - a Mitsubishi HD1000u that was native 720p and bought back in 2008 and for gaming on a big screen it definitely makes a BIG difference. 720p is still OK, but it lacks that "pop" that you get with HD systems on smaller screens...

Some additional geekery about the screen:

In this image, each square is scaled to represent 1 square inch...(hey what can I say, when I quit playing Madden and NCAA each year there's some downtime to fill...LOL )

If the player's picture is life-size or smaller, you're doing it wrong.

Try to seek her "expertise" as to what uniforms combination your team should wear.

Then in the middle of the game, pause it and take a view pictures & play with the HDR lighting.

Show her it's "more than just football"

She'll fall for it everytime.
