Re: Adam Thompson (NCAA Designer) Q&A Thread

Im not sure if youre still answering questions in here Adam, but I was just curious about something. Earlier in this thread you mention the way ratings are compiled for players and teams will be changed in the near future...I was just wondering if you could explain how this will be done? I may be wrong about this but you also stated to someone complaining about a certain teams player ratings and that EA only has a certain ammount of scouts working to get those ratings per region. Will this be changed as well? With all the complaining of player ratings on all the sites ive been at, I'm just wondering if EA is noticing this, and has plans to fix whatever it is they can fix in the near future. I know its not a perfect system, but I guess I just wanted to get your thoughts on the subject.

Back to answering questions. I think I picked up where I left off...

Meaning...QBs can have maybe 5-7 different arm throwing motions to choose from, just like how in basketball games you can pick your jumpshot style. And vice versca for running styles.

3) Does it tick you and the rest of team off who read these boards when guys get on here and flame you guys and call you lazy for this and that reason?
I've always loved all the EA games until NBA Live became weaker then NBA 2k in 07, and March Madness took a nose dive. I liked Tiger Woods and Fight Night but now its mainly football for me as the other games just arent as fun to me.

4) Do you guys ever play 2k games like NBA 2k8 which I happen to like a lot?
1) Not on 09.
2) This sounds like something the gameplay guys would consider. I'm sure it is on the radar.
3) Yes, but I've learned to laugh about it. Lazy is not a good word to describe us.
4) I used to on Dreamcast. I played a lot of APF 2K8. I have to play a lot of games in my line of work. Fortunately we have a game library here. I can't play at my desk because for some reason, dev kits won't play retail games!

You need to have the rosters match up on both consoles for online to work.

Well, we don't want to make it money like it was back on PS2.

Surely we could, but we'd have to implement it and change the way player heads work. And then you throw on a helmet and obscure it anyway. Seems like a lot of work that could be spent on something more important. We do talk about it every year during brainstorming.

Well, this year you will now have team specific playbooks. Last year I believe it was based on your position.
I don't think losing your position was added, but maybe. Ask Greg on NCAA Strategies.
Freezing?

It is pretty subtle. All it does is make the kick meter a little harder to see, and you feel a heartbeat through the controller rumble. It's a silly little feature, but I like it. I don't know if you could unfreeze him.

Also, as you guys keep adding information (features and such) how are you able to fit all of the games "INSIDES" (as in code for new information in the game) onto 1 disk every year? Do you really leave that much space on the disk or do you compress code every year to allow for the new changes?

Also for rivalry trophies, the OSU/UM rivalry, what would be cool is WHEN the buckeyes win they get gold pants. And if for some weird reason Tressel and the bucks lose, UM gets whatever they get (I'm not sure what they get). It's a tradition of the rivalry.

Thanks
I think I answered this for you in the pridesticker thread, right?
I'm not sure how those guys do it! I know disk space is always a factor. The code itself doesn't take up much space. The art, UI, and sound is what takes up space.

It is based on region and what conference you are already in. So with UCF, you won't get invited to the PAC 10. And for some reason we have C-USA and Big East as the same conference prestige, so you won't get an invite there. UCF can go to the SEC and ACC.

No, we don't do this.

Thanks very much! I've been looking for an answer for months! Looking forward to hearing from you. There have been hints, but no certain references to specific consoles, and plus, since it's lil' ole wake, I never believe it until I see it. here's to hoping.
No. It was still under construction when we did stadiums I believe.

Atleast 07 got something right.
WE have a finite amount of resources to get the game done. I was limited to 50 alternate uniforms and Marshall didn't make the cut this year.
I followed a link to a Marshall message board at the bottom of this thread (where if has sites that link here) and someone guessed it took 2-4 minutes to do an alternate uniform. It takes more time than that just to make the uniform selectable in the database, let alone making a uniform and putting it in game.

How come no refs or chain gangs on the field?

What are Colorado State's uniforms for 09 and does a cannon go off after a score?

Thanks
Every time you add new characters with logic to the field, it uses up system resources. We added new sidelines and cheerleaders this year. Didn't have the budget for refs and chain gangs.
Colorado has the Green/Gold, White/White, and the alt with the gold jersey/green pants.
I went into game with Colorado State versus Ole Miss to check for the cannon, however I must be off my game today. First play I throw a pick. I super sim defense. First play of this drive... another pick! Super sim defense. Ok... this time I'm gonna score. Nope, first play I throw a pick! Sorry, that's enough for me!
(please note this isn't any indication of the game being broken... they were dumb throws on my part)

Hopefully we got all the teams right. We were going to do the cannon animation but it didn't make it in for 09. It will probably be in 2010.

I don't see why it wouldn't be. You're gonna have to practice it though, that isn't a canned move. You gotta learn to shake the sticks just right and stuff. It is pretty neat.

Not on NCAA 09. I've been waiting for the renovations to be complete before changing the game model. I have it top of the list of stuff for 2010 though.

I'll ask the dynasty designer to take a look.

We work very closely with them. We also have a lot of central teams that work on both games. We aren't segregated from the other game teams or nothing. We have lunch with the Madden guys, the NASCAR guys, the Tiger guys. We also brainstorm features together. So just as Madden guys have input into our game, we have input into Madden. We are all crazy football fans here!
We try to share features as much as possible. But even sharing a feature comes at a price. It would be less resources to get the field goal nets from Madden than creating them from scratch, but it is still considerable amount of work that we didn't have time for with the other features we added.
There isn't really a rivalry or anything, and we want both games to be really good. But if you were to do a survey, NCAA is the more popular game to play for the guys on both teams .

One question and if this has been asked already then 4get it...but i remember back in the day we got a feature that i loved THE CROWD NOISE METER!!..there was nothing more gratifying then to whatch a opossing QB crumble under the screams of 105K + fans @ neyland (or whatever your favorite stadium was)..however i am very much aware that you have implimented the drastic crowd volume back into the game this year but is there any chance of having the user doing it once again???..or kinda having it like a tiger woods gamebreaker setup wher after so many big plays by the home team that the crowd get so loud to the point that either the coach or QB calls a TO or the play is busted up completely...to where lineman dont come off the ball or the center hikes it and the QB is just standin there like WTF???..lol @ this point im just throwin in ideas but i lament.... if you had the surround system turned up while the parental units were gone playin your season..its almost like being there... once again thanks 4 all this
Yeah, you can pump up the crowd like on PS2. But we left the noise meter off.

I think I heard you can move guys around manually. I know initially because of how the data is syched between your console and the servers, we weren't going to do the job offers (you'd have multiple people in dynasty getting the same offers), but I don't know if they found a solution to it or what. Unfortunately I didn't have time to try out online dynasty this year.

For example if there are 8 people in the dynasty but 4 of the people share ps3's in someway if those people had to play eachother, is this possible?

Thanks
Yeah, I believe there is support for this. So you and your roomates can be in the same online dynasty.

1. how does the BCS work in NCAA 09.. what all does it look at to determine it's rankings?
2. Is the strength of schedule actually a determining factor for a ranking?
3. I think it should be harder for a non-bcs team to make it to one of the jan. 1st bowls
1. It is supposed to work like real life, using records and the polls.
2. Yes it is.
3. It is harder, at least to get in the National Championship game. I have gone undefeated with UCF and lost out on BCS championship bids to 1 loss teams.

On to my question. How is co-op play this year? I know it wasn't in last year, but I've heard that it is in this year. Are there any differences? Like does truck stick/hit stick work for player two? I know on PS2 that it took a year for them to get that in, so I was just curious. That's all for now, looking forward to the game in a bit over a month, keep up the good work it doesn't go unnoticed.
Hmm.... not sure what you mean.

It's much better I think. The depth chart bug is definitely fixed.

1. Does the depth chart still get reset every time you edit a player?

2. Did the "Create-A-Recruit" bug get fixed? In '08, if you created a prospect, some ratings didn't map properly. For example, no matter what you set Catch in Traffic as, the player would have a 0 in this. And some other attributes, such as Stamina I think, seemed to be determined by an average of other attributes rather than being set properly in the "Create" screen. Also, several attributes seemed to be simply mapped to wrong attribute.

It seems like someone just made some simple database mapping errors in creating the feature. For a recruiting dork like me, this was annoying as it made creating a recruit an exercise in frustration. At one point, I tried to figure out all the mismappings so that I could still create players, but, quickly figured out there was simply no workaround for some of the errors.

3. Also, in NCAA 08, there seemed to be a limit to the amount of recruits that could be created. This is understandable and fine, but, when you created too many recruits, you wouldn't get an error or anything, the game would just let you continue to make prospects. Then the created prospects after the invisible "cut-off" would just go into limbo and never appear in the recruit pool. Do you have any idea how many recruits can actually be created in NCAA 09 and if any kind of "cut-off" has been put in?

4. Has there ever been any internal discussion about reaching out to the community for support with putting team rosters together? I know you guys do the best that you can do with 100+ teams of 70 players each, but, it seems that roster makeup could still be improved. There are a lot of roster dorks for particular teams (like myself with Alabama) that can tell you every player, their height/weight, number, their projected position for the 2008 season, what recruits are most likely to actually make an impact, what their strengths/weaknesses are, etc.

This isn't really a huge deal since a lot of people that care just use rosters put together after the fact anyway. But, I also know that when the rosters were posted to an Alabama message board that I frequent recently, there was a lot of "EA screwed up the rosters again!" talk. I figure that this goes on everywhere, as most people don't realize the amount of work involved with 100+ NCAA teams and the difficulty in getting quality news about some of them.
1. Yeah, I just tried it and it reset the depth chart.
2. I'm not sure. I don't have time to try this today.
3. Sorry, I don't know how many you can have. I never use this feature cause they never sign with me!
4. There are a lot of discussions going on right now about rosters.

I don't know what the plan is. There has always been complaining. We'll never be able to make everyone happy with the ratings! That's just the nature of sports games.

Re: Adam Thompson (NCAA Designer) Q&A Thread

The question about sliders and ratings:
What he meant was lets say a WR has 80 for catching. If the WR catch slider is at zero would that mean the game bases his catches off of the 80 he's rated at?
Then if you move the catch slider to say 20 would that in effect make the game base the WR's catch ability at 80 + whatever bonus the slider gives him.

Does it work that way?
I think the goal most people would want is sliders that effectively worked like this:

Interception slider at 0 means you wouldn't see any INT's. Bump it up to 5 and you'd get a couple here and there..and so on..

Lately it just seems sliders are placebos and have little if any affect.

Adam, I think you may have misunderstood my question. I was not asking about using different rosters, just setting my depth chart for my Buckeyes offline, then saving it, then each time I go online I don't have to set my depth chart.

When you're playing people randomly online they don't always want to give you a few minutes to adjust your depth chart.

I got a simple question here Adam.

When NIU scores a touchdown does the game have the howl?

My friend likes to use NIU a lot and he always complains about there being no howl.

Yeah I'd like to see this fixed somehow, but it won't get done this late in the cycle. Perhaps we could get a fix for this in a patch? It really is a bigger deal than it sounds, especially for the roster editors.

It is a huge deal. I thought this was fixed. By the depth chart bug being fixed for '09, I thought Adam was referring to this as well. Bummer. Hopefully it can be addressed because it is extremely annoying.

1. Yeah, I just tried it and it reset the depth chart.
Ok this sucks. I hated everytime i wanted to edit a player it reset my D/C. And its still in the game..ugh

And the Create a recruit attribute switch-a-roo is most likely still in the game also. .......And just that quick I got over it. Im so ready for the demo
