USC Struggles Early, But Wins 54-21

Los Angeles, California

Matt Barkley made his debut as the first true Freshmen QB to ever start the season opener for USC. Him and the entire Trojan offense seemed to have a tough time against Tomey's blitzing defense early. On the flip side of things, the defense also seemed to have a hard time against Spartan running back Lamon Muldron early in the game. They would eventually get their act together but at one point trailed 10-14 and 13-14 at halftime to an overmatched San Jose Spartans team.

The Trojans took the opening second half possession in for a TD on a 48 yard TD strike from Matt Barkley to Wide Receiver Bryce Butler. On the first play of the Spartan possession Taylor Mays got his second interception and took it down to the Spartan 10, where eventually Joe McKnight would run it in.
The Spartans struggled early in the second half throwing their second interception of the half on just their third offensive play giving the Trojans the ball deep in their own territory again, where Matt Barkley would hook up with Anthony McCoy for his third td pass to give the Trojans a 34-14 lead just a couple minutes into the second half.

The Spartans would score on their next possession, but never came close again. The Trojans adjusted their defense and got pressure on senior QB, Kyle Reed, all afternoon forcing 5 interceptions.

Taylor Mays had a dominating defensive day leading the team (tied with two others) with 10 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, and even a forced fumble midway threw the third quarter.

Matt Barkley's debut was about what you would expect from a true freshmen completing just under 50% of his passes but 271 yard, 3 td passes, and best of all, zero interceptions.

The Spartan's brought pressure all game long holding the Trojans to a little over 4 yards a carry and also getting 2 sacks.

Joe McKnight led the Trojan running backs with 84 yards on 18 carries and two scores. Stafon Johnson also had a td and 55 yards, and Alan Bradford, CJ Gable, and Stanley Havili also got some carries.

The Spartan offense was led by running back Lamon Muldrow, who had 169 yards on 26 carries and 2 scores.

Next up for the USC Trojans is a big trip to Columbus to face the 7th ranked Buckeyes in a "collision in Columbus."

Blackshirts Look Soft!!!!!!
The Nebraska defense struggled from the opening kick against Howard
Schnellenberger's pro style offense. The linebackers looked bad except for the redshirt freshman Sean fisher who played great and will be the only one to receive a Blackshirt.
The husker offense on the other hand was crisp and explosive Roy Helu jr had 38 carries for 213 yards and looked like a true star. The young but talented receiving core had their moments highlighted by Meno Holt who had 89 yards on 3 reciptions and a 51 yard touchdown catch.
Nebraska plays Arkansas State next week.

Mauling the Hapless
Florida opens the season with a blowout win.

The gators were ready to get out on the field and start the 2009 campaign showing in their 61-7 win over FCS SE. The defense came out a little rusty as they gave up an opening drive touchdown to the visitors. From then on the Gator D put the clamps on the FCS offense and they would not score again.

From there on it was all Gators. Tim Tebow got all his work done before the 1st quarter ended leading the offense to scores on their first 3 drives. He hit Deonte Thompson for a 61yd TD catch on the first drive. He found Riley Cooper for a 16yd TD catch on the second drive. Then on his 3rd and final drive he took it in himself for a 5 yd TD run.

John Brantley came in and threw 2 TD passes in the second to Nelson and Cooper. Brandon James took a punt back 63yd in the 2nd also. In the second half it was all back-ups and all running. Chris Rainey found the end zone in the third on a 2yd run.

On a very strange play the Gators got a safety when punter Chas Henry had a beautiful punt that landed right at the 2 and stuck. As the Gators went to touch it up a FCS player ran in picked it up and then tried to run for it but he went into the end zone and never made it back out.

Florida finished with 514yds of total offense including 226yd rushing on 37 carries and 288yd passing on 11-15 and no interceptions. FCS SE had 146yd total with 69yd rushing and 77yd passing.

T. Tebow 6/6 138yd 2 TD
J. Brantley 5/9 150yd 2 TD

J. Demps 10 car 104yd 1 TD
C. Rainey 12 car 46yd 1 TD
E. Moody 9 car 52yd

R. Cooper 4 rec 81yd 2 TD
D. Nelson 3 rec 94yd 1 TD
D. Thompson 2 rec 84yd 1 TD

B. Spikes 7 tack 2 TFL 1 SK
M. Wright 7 tack 1 TFL
D. Munroe 1 tack 1 INT

RECRUITING TRAIL:
Before the game Florida got some great news as the #2 ***** CB in the country Rob Cronin and the #12 *** C Rod Baldwin committed to play at UF next year.

Texas wins glorified scrimmage

Colt McCoy led the way as the Longhorns dominated the UL Monroe Warhawks in a 52-10 win this Saturday. Malcolm Williams snagged two McCoy touchdown passees in the first quarter to put them out into a quick lead. McCoy then hit G Smith with an 8 yard strike to put them up 21-0.

No less than 15 seconds later, Sergio Kindle came around the edge to get the sack and forced fumble, while Lamarr Houston picked it up and took it to the house to give the Longhorns a 28-0 lead 1minute into the second quarter.

The only blemish on the day were two McCoy interceptions, one of which was taken back for a touchdown to give the Warhawks their lone touchdown.
The start of the second half saw Jordan Shipley take the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and for the whole game, he saw 146 kickoff return yards, 57 punt return yards and 65 receiving yards for 268 all purpose yards.

The defense looked stout as always, with Kindle picking up a team high three sacks with the whole team amassing 7 sacks total and one interception with a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

The longhorns look ahead to Wyoming next week in what looks to be another easy win for them.

CAL opens up the season with a 45-27 win over Maryland.

Cal came into the game thinking one thing and that was to give the ball to their impact player. And they did just that handing the ball to Jahvid Best 29 times on his way to 195 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. After starting slow Best started to pick it up and scoring from one yard out on the second drive. Back up RB Shane Vereen proved he was a solid runner on his 12 att 94 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cal really didn't have much of a passing game as Kevin Riley job was to manage the game and convert on key 3rd downs. Maryland put up a good fight with a balance attack with Chris Turner who passed for 319 yards and 2 touchdowns and Da'Rel Scott who rushed for 119 yards but Maryland could never finish the drive as Cal defense made some key 3rd down stops. Cal plays FCS WEST next week.

Just got back and played my game. Eeked out a victory against New Mexico (that can't be good in the future, let's hope I just have some rust from not playing for 3 days). Both DL's had 5+ sacks in an ugly game. My defense played horribly! [Reply]
