I love this game but...

I'm on the verge of saying the hell with it and trading it in. I'm just so frustrated with passes not going where I want them to and the CPU's defense blanketing my players nearly 100% of the time. Anyone have any advice? I don't have time to do "practice" mode and if I play on rookie or beginner or whatever it is I win by 40 but then I go up one level and I get crushed consistently. There should be THAT much difference from one level to the next.

did you try any of the sliders posted by other players!? moving from one level to another does makes it harder, that's what its suppose to do right, but you just have to play until you get used to it. this is the first basketball game i played since the dreamcast day of nba 2k1 and it took me a while to get used to.

I have accepted that my turnovers balance out the amount of times I get to the line over the cpu.

There isn't really sliders needed to get good at the game, it's just practice. I played on HOF from the start and it was rough the first couple of weeks, but then I just started to win a couple, then a few more, and then before I knew it, I could make the playoffs.

Practice, practice, practice...

use icon passing. I think its LB (xbox360) or L1 (Ps3) someone correct me if im wrong. Once u have the icons up u can then move the left stick away from the defender guarding your teammate and sort of lead him. It works much better.

I'm struggling really hard with this game too. I got it last week and i'm still messing around with the settings. Does anyone know which control layout is best? Should i just stick the default layout?

Default is the way to go, and just like the guy said above. Smart basketball is the key.

Re: I love this game but...

How can you not have time to practice but you have time to play a game? Sorry, that makes no sense. Instead of playing two games a day, go to practice mode and learn each of your players releases (on multiple types of shots) and work on player control too, then go play a game. Also you should run through all of the tutorials at least once. You'll find that you play much better if you actually know your team and its' players.

When you turn the difficulty up you're gonna lose some games, that's how it works, it gets harder. You then have to learn from your mistakes, and improve your game.

Like another user said, play smart basketball. That's the main thing after learning the controls.

Practice, practice, practice.

I feel your pain with the passing. Nothing more infuriating than pressing in one direction and it passing to someone in the total opposite direction and it of course being picked off.
