OKay, So I Finally Got Off Of The Fence And Got The Game: Got A Few Questions
After posting the "How Much Of An Upgrade Is This From 2k8" Thread, I finally decided to se efor myself.
I have been happy with Live and still am, but this games first impression is pretty positive as well.
What I did was trade in my collecting dust wii, and everything associated with it, and got 2k and 3 other games..with plenty of credit left over. Not a bad deal.
Anyway, the game looks great, and the animations seem a little more subtle. I was sitting around jamming the stick trying to pull moves off, until I figured out that I need to let the dang move finish.
I played vs the CPU allstar, which is probably where I will stay. Hawks(CPU)-Magic. I saw a ton of "make me nod my head and chuckle" animations..balls being slapped out of peoples hands, a deflected pass going off of the backboard, I saw some fast breaks, without too much insane catchup (is this something you see more on All Star and HOF?). I LOVE the blocked shot sound and animation.
A couple of things irked me. The long standing tradition of CPu controlled players, performing outside of their skill sets. If I am playing manual help defense off of Zaza Pachulia who is camped out 15-18 feet from the hoop, its for a good reason. I dont want to see him hitting that shot at a 50% clip. Nor do I want to see Mauricee Evans draining a fall away, contested 3 pointer at the shot clock buzzer very often. That only happened once, so I can live with that.
Another thing that I can see being a SERIOUS problem, especially online, is that there is litte, to no sense of contact inthe paint. I crossed and drove into the lane with Jameer Nelson a few times and felt as if I just glided through guys.
All and all, its a good game, and the pace felt good..I feel like NBA Live has superior floor spacing, and more adaptive AI. I see teams in NBA Live actually switch up to zone defenses. I have yet to see that in a 2k game.
NBA Live does an excellent job of replicating what it feels like to be IN an NBA arena. 2k has the presentation of a TNT NBA broadcast nailed down. Different approaches that work just as well, in my opinon. The pace of the game as it mirrors the NBA is actually a little faster then Live, which was a surprise to me.
I'm confused by a couple of things though:
1) I think I caught the hang of this as the game went on, but the post game and moves seem different. You seem to be able to do most of your body movements, pivot, head and shoulder fakes with the left stick, and your shot selection and shot fakes with the right. Correct?
2) On ball defense: How can I tell when I am on "lock on defense"? I seem to be sliding off of players. My player seems to be able to stay in his defensive psotion without the lock on, and I can use the stick to play position denial.
3) I dont understand how dual player control works this year. How can I activate WHO I want to set a screen, post up, come off a screen, or cut?
Anyway, I dont regret giving the game a whirl. I'll be playing lots and lots of hoops this winter, spring and summer with these 2 fine games. The game looks GREAT, and once I get used to the control scheme again, I think I'll see the gameplay flow better.
