SLIDER RESEARCH PROJECT

In developing the most realistic set of sliders while retaining a fun experience, I will test and re-test dozens of sliders and their effects over the following weeks. In doing so, I will need help from fellow gamers who will have spare time to test out games and post their results. If anyone is interested, please reply. I have played one game so far (Pro difficulty) and will post results from which to begin.

These sliders will try to find a balance between simulation/fun on Pro difficulty and when we reach our goal, possibly move up difficulty levels. This will be time consuming, as tiny increments will be made at every step.

Try to play the default settings with 6 Minute quarters. I'd appreciate it if ALL stats could be posted afterwards so that I can analyze and notice differences.

Re: SLIDER RESEARCH PROJECT

Default settings w/ 6 Minute quarters

Los Angeles Lakers @ Boston Celtics

Lakers
64 Points
27/50 FG (54%)
5/12 3PT (41%)
5/7 FT (71%)
15 Assists
3 Turnovers
5 Fouls
18 Total Rebounds (4 Off.)
3 Steals
2 Blocks
24 Points in Paint
9 Bench Points
4 Second Chance Points
2 Fast Break Points

Celtics
63 Points
27/46 FG (58%)
3/12 3PT (25%)
6/8 FT (75%)
18 Assists
5 Turnovers
4 Fouls
20 Total Rebounds (2 Off.)
2 Steals
3 Blocks
38 Points in Paint
0 Bench Points
2 Second Chance Points
4 Fast Break Points

*If game was 12 Minute quarters, final score would be in the neighborhood of 128-126 in favor of Lakers.*

The Good
3 point shots taken.
Steals and blocks.
Defensive rebounds.

The Bad
Amount of shots.
Low free throw count.
Too many assists.
Low turnover count.
Not enough fouls.
Little or no offensive rebounding.
Points in Paint.
Bench points non-existant.
Second Chance points.
Fast Break Points could be a little better.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Superstar players (Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett) as well as star players (Ray Allen, Pau Gasol) shot very high percentages from the floor (between 55-70 each) due to wide open jumpshots or close range shots.

A strong and athletic big man like Andrew Bynum is automatically too dominant because of the standing dunk as well as high close range shot rating.

The clipping bug when a defender is near you on fast break and you dance around him causes low percentage fast break opportunities. This might just be a glitch (possible patch?).

Too many jumpshots go in when wide open (for CPU).
CPU teammates lack def. awareness and allow easy points in the paint.
CPU opponents run into each other and clog one side of court when running plays, possibly due to low off. awareness.

Everybody can back in defenders, no matter the size differential. This could either be designed this way or the strength rating in play. Hoping for the latter.

Should add that FG% is amazingly high. Your shot totals are really only a tad inflated. Too many three pointers, not enough steals, really. (obviously just one game). I also think your defensive rebounding numbers would be low as compared to the NBA.

You may want to check 82games.com for statistics from last year, to get an idea of the averages per team for better statistical validity.

You really should play more of a sim length if you're going for realism, instead of trying to deduce what the numbers would be if you played a "sim-length" game.

Thanks for putting work in though, much appreciated.

Re: SLIDER RESEARCH PROJECT

UPDATE: I was toying with the sliders today after playing one more game at near-default levels. These sliders were the best I've ever made. Posting with a guy like Bayless against O.J. Mayo was impossible. I got in about a foot after 2 seconds. Teams shot around 47% from the field, 35% from 3, and had good amount of total rebounds (a little low on offensive). Blocks and steals were still low, and guys actually miss open shots once in a while. Only problem I encountered is LACK OF TURNOVERS. Will test it out a few more times tonight to see if it was fluke. If not, I'm posting them.

Re: SLIDER RESEARCH PROJECT

we need an "average joe's" set of sliders...lat year someone put together a spread sheet with all the averages for each slider setting. amazingly enough, the averaged out sliders were the best out there.

Great idea. I'd love to see a speadsheet of everyone's sliders from the forum with averages. I already try to compare and contrast what different users' sliders do, but that would make it so much easier!

I have a set I play with that give me great stats at 12 minute quarters. I have two problems, PitP is a little high (46-50 pts per team, should be closer to 36-38) and the player movement and speed seems way too slow after playing with other slider sets.

Re: SLIDER RESEARCH PROJECT

unfortunately, they all have pip problems, all sliders here have way too many points in the paint, other problems are solved already tho, the backdoor passes for cpu is still there but can live with it, but pip is the one that bugs me still!

We CAN fix this damnit! We MUST!

But seriously, it boils down to this for me. The guards are scoring too much inside. The post players are not making enough moves FROM THE POST. The big guys really only score on quick lead passes from the PG and put back baskets.

The guards don't drive the lane realistically, instead they catch backdoor or quick lead passes near the hoop and shoot layups.

There isn't enough one on one play, this is the NBA. I love team play and most of the time the team should play within an offensive frame. But I rarely see a guard or small forward attempt to take his man off the dribble from the top of the key or on iso plays.

The hands slider being low helps a ton with quick inside cutters because they bobble the ball more often. Now if we can just get a more balanced big man game vs guard play game, I'll become a hermit, lol.

Re: SLIDER RESEARCH PROJECT

Unfortunately, it looks like things like this are going to have to be fixed with a patch since their a game engine issue. At this point, even when making the most drastic slider adjustments, it's still not ideal. The good news is a patch is in the works, although I don't know if these specific gameplay issues will be addressed.... though one would think it should be high on the priority list.
