Tony Gwynn's MVP Baseball (a brief case for MVP 09)

Tony Gwynn's MVP Baseball is of course a hypothetical game, but one that I think should be considered for next year. I present the reasoning in bullet point format:

- If there is any thought by EA to publish a baseball game for the latest consoles it would be beneficial to at least start building the game, rather than wait until there is too much catching up to do.

- Going the generic route would allow the developing team to get the fundamental engine down without having to concern themselves with trying to represent a particular license, be it pro or amateur.

- Having Tony Gwynn on board would give the game some clout with fans and help sell the game. Gwynn is a well loved Hall of Famer, one of the best hitters to have played the game, a great ambassador for the sport, and he also has his feet in both the college and pro game.

- Such a game would allow EA to keep the MVP name relatively fresh in fan's minds, plus it'd pretty much be a smooth transition from where MVP 07 left off.

- Tony Gwynn's MVP Baseball could easily expand the stadium and uniform editor from MVP 07, and when combined with the already solid player editing it would allow fans to create pro and amateur teams from past and present.

- Creating an engine with the basic building blocks would provide a solid base from which to build upon for any future game, whether it be a pro, college, or legends type of game.

Okay, so I'm just throwing the idea out there... And I think it could work...

You could also let the user choose to play a season of varying length, or a tournament like the College World series...

If it's an amateur league or team you could let the user choose between wood or metal bats...

Well, I'm not gonna rack my brain trying to come up with other ideas... Though I will add that Cal Ripken Jr would be the obvious other choice besides Tony Gwynn.

I think it is a great idea. You could create high schools also.

I like it.

Fully customizable, but maybe one big fake league to start with, so that even casual players that want a baseball game from EA but don't want to spend time creating can have fun. You can "start new league" and change everything, like type of league: professional, minor leagues, high school, international, collegiate, so that, for example, you can have a dynasty with an OS college baseball roster file where players have 4 years of eligibility, and could still go pro, etc. In order for it to be truly customizable, there would have to be customizable logos or a way of exporting logos from a website or something and stadiums that are similar to real life ones but with some changes and fake names; ones that with some customization can look (and be renamed) like Yankee Stadium. It would be a treat for real MVP fans.

Maybe that's asking for a lot, and I'm not sure if there's something in the exclusivity contract between 2K and MLB that prevents EA from creating that kind of customizable game, but is sure would be a sweet game.

Yeah that's what I was thinking... Even if it was just a handful of people that would do that.

Or you could just have a league generator of some sort for people who didn't want to edit teams.

And I'm pretty sure there's nothing preventing them. They could just put in a simple logo editor, the same way that Konami does with Pro Evo/Winning Eleven.

Uh... Yeah... I guess... What, do you work for EA or something? Or do you think if he pitched it to them they might like the idea???

Also, maybe the theme of the game could be an instructional one. I'm sure Gwynn would be down with that. You could have it so the fundamentals of baseball were somehow given... Or maybe a separate mode where you learn different aspects of the game.

Oh, no, I don't work for EA or anything. I just go to SDSU and know the guy. It would have to be during a stream of OT conversation(s), but eventually I could bring up the concept.

But not now. If his team starts winning, then it is easiest to talk to him loosely.

I can see it now.

"Hey, remember me, you cut me from the team last year, soooo, how about you do an EA videogame?"

LOL I go to all of their practices and games. The guy passes by me entering the office as he sees me take swings at the turf right next to the stadium. He acknowledges me and talks to me quite a bit, actually. The guy even remembers whenever I wear an NL West team hat that isn't the Padres, and points out that I gotta give that hat up haha.

But yeah, I mean it's not like my question will get him to do anything like this, but the other problem is probably that he wants his team to focus on playing and not be the center of some major pub, especially when it comes to video games. I think it starts with him setting the example, as well. That said, I don't know if the guy would be for it anyway.

Though, he does tend to be a spokesperson for a lot of things...
