Long Beach State

I attended the ASU-UAB series this weekend (3 game sweep by ASU) and the PA announcer said that the next home series for ASU was vs. the Long Beach State 49ers. In MVP 07 they have them as the Long Beach State Dirtbags (pretty funny). Which one is it? 49ers or Dirtbags?

Go Devils!

Re: Long Beach State

The official mascot is the 49ers.

During the CWS in (I think) 1989 they were nicknamed the "dirtbags" because of their dirty appearance they always had. It also refered to their style of play and success against higher profile baseball teams.

The style of play is going 100% all the time. Always going hard and never letting up.

I also heard that as a startup team without a home field, the team would practice on an all-dirt field for their rigorous workout becoming covered in dirt.

But again, to answer your question. They are officially the 49ers, but the baseball team (and their own athletic department) will refer to them as the dirtbags.

---From the above website---
The Long Beach State baseball program started in 1954 and **** Nen was their first player to make it to the Major League level.

In 1989 the Long Beach State "49ers" became known as the Long Beach State "Dirtbags." The unofficial nickname refers to the baseball program's "style of play and success against higher profile programs." In 2003 two former Dirtbags made it to the major league level and each has commented about the unusual nickname (which is still regularly used to this date):

"Being a Dirtbag means giving one-hundred percent in everything you do...going all-out on every play, and always putting the team before yourself." - Bobby Crosby

"A Dirtbag is a style of playing the game of baseball. It is the type of player every team needs… Loves to play the game everyday… He maybe does not have all the skills of the greatest player, but his attitude and the way he commits himself to the game is what makes this Dirtbag great. Dealing with adversity is what completes being a Dirtbag. A team player at all times (hardnosed)." - Mike Gallo

Re: Long Beach State

I didn't even know there was such a school as "North Dakota State". Is that the school where "Coach" was supposed to be?
