XBOX Classic Rosters Version 2

I've finally updated the classic rosters I made last year. I'm not done with everything I wanted to do but did the most important stuff.

I redid the Power and Contact ratings by factoring in the era they played and fields they played on. I did this by using expAVG ang expSLG from baseball-reference.com

I redid the speed ratings by using a spreadsheet I found on mvpmods.com that uses Bill James' Speed system. I also redid steal tendency and baserunning ability so the ratings fit much better.

I finally edited the few players I never got around to before (Aparicio, Friend, McCracken, Kluzewski, and added Joe Mauer to the Twins.)

I made all catchers default mask to the traditional one (this was the equipment issue that bugged me most.)

I updated the batting orders to match the new ratings.

This is more a version 1.5 right now. I'm still going to make it possible to do a fantasy draft by downgrading the minor leagues so those guys wouldn't get picked before the legends. I need to play around with equipment to get rid of padding and such. I'll probably put in the correct uniform numbers but will be a last detail. The next thing I'm going to do probably next week though is create some negro leaguers and some of the better Senators and Browns who aren't represented (Walter Johnson is definitely a big missing piece to this roster.)

Re: XBOX Classic Rosters Version 2

Just a note on attributes:

I used formulas and stayed pretty strict to them in order to be more objective. I stand by them because the players are pretty well represented. Don't be alarmed when Hank Aaron's power is only in the low 80's; only a few guys like McGwire, Bonds, and Ruth are better. 75 is a very good power or contact rating, this isn't Madden.

Power: someone posted a formula on MVPMODS that I used. It mainly factors in SLG but also HR/AB. I factored in expSLG so its era specific.

Contact: based off of batting average and expAVG.

Discipline: based off of walks and strike outs

Speed: uses Bill James' rating system. Found a spreadsheet on MVPMODS that gives the ratings. For guys prior to WWII I had to adjust the formula a bit because caught stealing wasn't recorded for a number of years. Some guys have no stolen base stats even.

Steal Tendency: stolen bases plus caught stealing as a percentage of opportunities (times on 1st or 2nd). Its not a perfect formula for obvious reasons but it works well enough.

Baserunning Ability: based off of stolen base success rate. This one was hard to do and since I only saw a hand full of the guys play I chose to do this instead of a subjective rating.

Fielding: based off of fielding percent and graded by position since SS inheritantly have a lower FP than 1B men.

Range: uses range factor even though that stat is flawed, but its the best solution

Bunt, and the throwing ratings I either got off the default rosters, total-classics.com, my knowledge of the player, or just a generic rating based off of fielding rating. These ones are the most flawed ratings on the rosters. Suggestions are welcome, even if its just to boost/lower a specific player.

Feel free to comment on issues with a guy's ratings especially pitchers (arsenals are from Neyer/James book on pitchers BTW.) I'll even take suggestions on players to put in as long as you suggest who to take out. I still need to go thru the old posts from version 1 because there was good insight there- so don't be mad if I didn't take your suggestion because I just haven't gotten to them yet.) I tried to have the starting 8 be in their true position but was leinient on OF positions, have a corner IF, middle IF, a backup C, and two OF on the bench. For pitchers at least 5 starters, a spot starter who is put in the LRP slot, and 6 relievers including at least one true closer.

If anybody wants to help out with equipment and lowering the minor league attributes so the players suck, just holler. Any help is appreciated, and would definitely speed up the process of getting these totally done.

These really need some work.
All of the players uniform #'s are off.
You have Babe Ruth as #4 and Maris #3.
On the Reds the #'s are right just on the wrong person.
Rose as #5?, Bench as #8, and Morgan #14???

Yeah, all the #'s are wrong. On the original rosters they made some sense because it went by the batting order, but I shuffled the orders up so its a mess. Its on my list of things to fix, this time I'll probably find correct numbers.

I'm getting pretty far on editing the minor leagues so those players suck (this allows a fantasy draft.) But haven't been working on these in about a week.

Re: XBOX Classic Rosters Version 2

I just about have these things finished. I have put the correct numbers on the position players finally and took off the stupid leg and arm padding and got batting gloves off of most of the older players (I know I missed some as I did it in a hurry). I just have to change the numbers on the pitchers to do and will almost definitely get that done tonight. Shouldn't take more than 2 hours.

I also made Walter Johnson and the other HOFers that were on the St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators (I chose not to put them on the Orioles and Twins) and put them in the FA pool.

A team of 25 Negro Leaguer greats is also on the rosters now. They are on the Durham Bulls (TB AAA team). Many thanks to CookooForCocoa for help with them. I put them in the majors just to see where they stacked up and they were ranked #1 in three of the categories and 3rd in the fourth category (I think it was fielding) so thats pretty accurate as its an all time team for a whole league rather than just one team.

The big thing is already finished. I made all the minor leaguers (non-legends) suck so a fantasy draft is possible. But I'm having a problem with Dynasty Mode because of it. I put all the pitchers' stamina down to 1 and now the game freezes on occasion in dynasty mode. I'm pretty sure its because teams run out of arms to use so I'm gonna have to go back and give everybody a 20 for stamina or something and see if that helps.

I will release the rosters with everything but fixing the freezing in dynasty probably late tonight or tomorrow at the latest. Hopefully I can fix the freezing by next week. I'm also thinking about going through all the pitchers and reranking them as some guys are ranked much too high and some not high enough. But thats a big project for another day and probably won't get into it until well into the summer.

Any suggestions after I release them are very much wanted. If you feel I overlooked a guy just state your case and suggest who to take off. Most of the ratings are set in stone (see above post explanations), but if I screwed up on a guys bunting, throwing power and accuracy, or if I just have a pitcher way off just holler. For pitchers they should have the correct pitches (I used the Bill James/Rob Neyer book on pitchers) but I might have some of their pitches way over or under ranked. Even just little suggestions are appreciated as I know I screwed up on a few guys' looks, etc. here and there.

I also edited potential ratings so not everybody is a 3 star anymore. The best HOFers are 5 stars (Ruth, Gehrig, Paige, etc), the HOFers who I feel are on the next level down and a few guys who didn't get into the hall are 4 stars (Rizzuto, Santo.) Most guys that were stars in their time are 3 stars. Guys that only made the rosters because I had to put someone there are 2 stars (most of the D-rays and D-Backs.)

Re: XBOX Classic Rosters Version 2

EDIT: Go to the first post on page 2 for the non-freezing rosters

Alright, finally got it updated. Now I just have to work on the freezing problem (but that will be awhile as I just want to play some exhibition games first.)

Here is the roster with correct uniform numbers and Negro Leaguers:

No problem man. This ended up being much more work than originally thought, but has been totally worth it. I've thought about doing AAA teams but I think I'll take a long break before doing that. If that happens I wouldn't expect them until the fall.

Re: XBOX Classic Rosters Version 2

thanks for the hard work and research, i think everyone here appreciates it and the criticism is meant well and not spiteful by anyone. Having done nfl rosters I know sometimes it feels like alot of hard work without any gratitude. the best thanks is people saying they really enjoy playing the game more cuz of your effort and this is the case with these historic xbox files. so thanks

Thanks for the encouraging words. I have no problem with criticism, as long as its constructive anyways. I actually appreciate the suggestions/criticism as its good to get multiple points of view on things. I don't claim to be a baseball history expert, so any help from fans of teams I don't know well goes a long ways!

Could somebody try and simulate a season with these rosters to see if they freeze. I want to make sure that is the rosters and not my game (it shouldn't be as I was able to sim with the original rosters.) Thanks to whomever does it. Also, it would be cool if you could post the final standings and such.
