If they got Sterling I'd quit buying the Show games. Seriously. Same with that guy that does the White Sox games...makes me cringe thinking about listening to either of them.

Re: John Sterling as Announcer?

Wow! I had no idea I'd get this many responses.
Like someone posted, I just got Satellite Radio too, and it's really fun listening to games by different broadcasters.
I was one of those who only knew Sterling by his "ThhhhhhhhhE YankeesWin.THHHHHHHE Yankees Win!", which I considered one of the most irritating calls in all of sports.
But. Having said that, after listening to him and Suzie for about two weeks, I gotta say I'm becoming a Yankee Fan just because of their announcers.
So...Here's the situation(Trying to mimic Sterling's style), SCEA could stick with what they have now, or just perhaps they might consider using an All-Star Play By Play team of Sterling, Morgan, and Miller?
Or maybe Bob Uecker????
BTW, I've always thought it was a crime that NCAA didnt get Keith Jackson to do their games.

Re: John Sterling as Announcer?

If The Show could follow 2K's commentary lines, etc., I think that I could stand their current crew better. The problem like someone posted earlier is that we don't want to hear we need a sandwedge to hit the ball, but the problem with our swing or the player's stats.

I think that money would be an issue for many of the announcers that people would like, but I do think SCEA could add a Jim Bowden or Grant Paulsen from MLB Radio on SiriusXM.

By the way, great thread. It is nice to see so many different opinions.

Scully and Joe Garagiola were excellent. I love Scully, but always thought he was even better with an excitable color man like Garagiola.

Bob Costas is really good, knows his stuff, has a great voice and doesn't intrude on the game like most announcers now do.

The best announcers know what to say, when to say it, and know when to say nothing. Hard to listen to games nowadays with all the yapping in 3/4 man booths, especially in football; makes me miss Pat Summerall even more.
Diamondbacks fans get the treat of listening to Joe every blue moon Sunday home game. The man's still got the passion for the game, and is still a hell of an announcer.

I say, topic-wise, either bring back Hud or at least book Karros for the same audio booth that Soup and Matt use. It sounds sometimes like Karros was talking into a trash can while recording his lines.

I would love team specific announcers, but understand it's very unlikely, so just bring in someone who has called nationally televised games and is still working:

Narrows it down to:

Chip Carey (TBS)
Gary Thorne (ESPN)
Joe Buck (FOX)
Bob Costas (CBS, MLB Network)
Vin Scully (NBC)
Dan Shulman (ESPN)
Sean McDonough (ESPN)

Any others?

Scully would be ideal since he's Vin Scully, and has called games since the days of b/w, he wouldn't sound out of place on classic rosters. But i don't see him coming in to do this at his age.

I hope the commentary in the next game is a little less intrusive, less of those "swinging a garden hose" calls when you look bad on a swing, etc.

The booth needs to feel more like a booth, they need to go back and forth a little more like the NBA 2K commentary.
Ron Darling floats around sometimes, too, so he belongs on your list imo. He is employed by the Mets booth, but occassionally I will channel surf, and turn to a nationally broadcasted game between two random teams, and sure enough, Ron Darling's voice jumps right out at me.

And I'm confused, so Sterling is not the TV guy? What is he? I remember hearing the "A-Bomb from A-Rod" call growing up watching Yankees games, and I always thought he was a pretty good announcer, although I do like Michael Kay also.

While we are on the subject of regional announcers, here's some guys who should NOT be considered: The Marlins broadcasters. I don't even know their names, but god they are terrible. One of them announces like he just landed on Earth and had never seen baseball before, eg: an excited 7 year old. They have no chemistry, and by the 3rd inning they are just talking about completely random inside jokes and stuff. I think the main reason I went with the Rays over the Marlins when I moved to Florida, is that I couldn't even stand watching Marlins games on TV.

To add some topicality to this post, I would honestly be fine with regional announcers in The Show. I'm not worried about bias or who they are. As long as they're good, I'm fine with it. I've watched a few games from random teams... I know that Detroit has a pretty good booth, because I watched Verlander's near no-hitter the other day.

Re: John Sterling as Announcer?

Joe Morgan was awful. He was terrible at his craft. I don't see how any baseball fan can think he did a good job. Its also funny hearing how difficult he was to work with as well, and how he would take zero constructive criticism. But seriously- he was bad.

I don't think Joe Buck is technically bad at his job, I just don't like him.

Vin Scully actually used to do the Sony baseball games for awhile. For some reason I find his voice very calming.

If they were actually going to implement a fuller and more robust presentation style with different booths, and/or pre and post game shows(one can dream, right?), I would like to see Kuiper and Krukow get another shot at doing commentary for a game, The Angels have a great team(Mark Gubicza and someone whos name escapes me), and I would love to get some pitcher specific commentary from Orel Hershiser- he is fantastic at breaking down pitchers.

They can certainly stay away from my hometown crew of Remy and Orsillo as well.

Re: John Sterling as Announcer?

Sterling is "the radio voice of the New York Yankees;" as his partner Susan Waldman says before every broadcast.

Honestly, it's tough for me to read everyone's opinion in Sterling. When I hear his voice, I hear the voice of a dear friend.

I'm sorry he irritates everyone so much! LOL! Don't get me wrong, I "get" it. For some reason I just feel like it's still a shame though...

He seems like an all around good guy and calls dramatic plays as well as anyone in the business, in my opinion.

Re: John Sterling as Announcer?

Nothing annoys me more than that "Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yankees win!!" which I've only heard on WFAN. (Must've been some Yankees promo?)

I want Ralph Kiner, NOW.

Oh God, no. Such a self promoting windbag always going for the big call, just the worst announcer there is.

IT IS HIGH! IT IS FAR! oh, it's caught 20 feet in front of the warning track, must have been a 200 mile gust of wind there...
