The 2007 New York Yankees

A new year, a new thread, and hopefully a different result at the end of the season this time!

I like what we've done with the pitching staff so far, especially dumping The Unit obviously. And as much as I liked Sheff I think it was a smart move to get rid of him for prospects.

Also, something cool........

A great replica of the old Yankee Stadium:

Yankees confirmed that the new stadium won't have a corporate name:

As for the 2007 team. I don't know, should be a fun year.

Offense should be the best in the league if guys stay healthy. Starting pitching has a lot of question marks. Can Wang repeat last year's success? Mussina tailed off in the 2nd half last year, who knows how long he'll keep going. I think even though Pettitte is back in the AL, we can still expect similar numbers to what he put up last year. Better stadium for him, and only 2 years ago he was dominant in the NL, and he was great in the 2nd half last year, so an era in the low 4's is likely imo. After that, who knows. It would be stupid to count on Pavano for anything. Nothing I've heard on Igawa sounds too encouraging but hopefully he can do a good job as a 5th starter. We do have a lot of options to fill the last 2 spots though, with Karstens, Rasner, Sanchez, Hughes, etc. I doubt Hughes will start the season in the majors, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't in the rotation by the end of it.

As for Clemens, I'm all for getting him. I don't think he'll put up close to the numbers that he did in the NL. We would probably be getting a low 4's era, who's going to be a 6 inning pitcher most nights. That's probably not worth the money he's going to get, but it's not my money, and it's only one year so if you can get boost the rotation in the middle of the season like that it's a good move. I don't think it's as much of a slam dunk that he would come here as the media and some fans are saying it is. I still think he'll be back in Houston.

Bullpen looks good, looks like it could be the deepest pen we've had in awhile. We'll see if Torre can do a better job of managing it this year.

Re: The 2007 New York Yankees

It will be interesting to see who will become our 4th and 5th starters between Pavano, Igawa, Karstens, and Rasner. Of course if we manage to sign Clemens we will only have to worry about 1 starter spot.

I wonder if Torre will move Proctor to the set-up position this year instead of Farnsworth(less).

Looks like the Yankees are trying to get Clemens closer to signing with them. Robinson Cano says he will switch from number 22 to 24.

I thought he was being considered for a starting role for the 5 spot?

Looks like he's staying until at least spring training. If he has a good spring, and the Yankees could get something for him they could deal him, but I doubt it, unless they decide to start Hughes or any of the other young guys in the rotation, and that is very unlikely. Or if Clemens comes at the start of the season, which also doesn't look like it will happen.

Cashman said Proctor is going to be in the pen now. Farnsworth did a good job when he was rested. When he didn't go more than one inning, and he didn't pitch back to back nights he was pretty dominant. So hopefully the Yankees use him that way this year and hopefully the bullpen is deep enough that Proctor doesn't have to be burned out.

Re: The 2007 New York Yankees

I hope they don't trade Pavano before the season starts. You gotta sell high, his price would be next to nothing right now because he hasn't proven anything after the injuries (and really besides his one solid season in Florida).

Hopefully he has a decent start to the season and then we can get some more for him in a trade. If he sucks, oh well, you'll still get the same price then that you'd get in the next two months.
