We're here, but as evidenced by previous team threads, we won't post much for some reason.

Yeah, never figured it out. I've tried to get something going, but to no avail.

Re: 2006 STL Cardinals

Alright, let's see if we can't get a little life into this thing.

Who are you guys leaning towards for the 5th starter position?

Honestly, I think they've got a great problem. To have basically 7 starting pitchers is fantastic. (I'm sure the Cubs are jealous) Anyway, I think I'd go with Ponson.

He really seems to be making a solid effort to straighten things out and has pitched pretty well this spring. Apparantly he looked REALLY good in his last outing. Plus, he's done it, he's got everything to gain and everything to lose, and well...my guy just feels this way.

And as far as Reyes and Wainwright, I'd send 'em both down to AAA. That way they're pitching everyday, and you can go with guys like Hancock or Nelson or Voyles or even Falkenborg in the pen.

Then you can always fall back on Reyes or Wainwright if somebody doesn't cut it.

Re: 2006 STL Cardinals

I totally agree. I think even if Reyes had outpitched Ponson to this point in s/t, I'd still go with Sid. A little more time in AAA won't hurt Reyes and he will certainly join the team at some point this season and could definitely prove valuable should the team make a playoff run. On the other hand, I would not be surprised at all if he was moved before the deadline in an attempt to land an impact player, most likely an OF. The only reason I can see that not happen is that the Cards have 4 free-agent-to-be SP in the rotation. My hope is that he is in the rotation for 2007.

Re: 2006 STL Cardinals

I agree with Ponson for #5 starter at this point.

I don't think we'll trade Reyes though, Wainwright I could see being packaged but Reyes I doubt (unless its a major addition). As you said with 4 FA pitchers to be, and with the money pitchers got this offseason I think Mulder is gone, Marquis could be to as he seems not to see eye to eye with management from time to time. Ponson would hopefully resign at a bit of a bargain due to we gave him a shot but he may look to cash in if he has a big year, then Suppan is solid and I think he'll stick around if we want him back.

Re: 2006 STL Cardinals

I have to agree with ya'll. Ponson looks to be the guy thats getting the job. He looks good and LaRussa seems happy with him. As far as the moves the Cards will make later this season, I look for them to trade Marquis for a left fielder by June. My initial guess would be Luis Gonzalez. He just seems to fit the LaRussa type. Plus it doesn't hurt that he is from Tampa, which is where TLR is from. The only way Marquis stays a Cardinal is if he pitches a lot better than he has the last 2 years, which I personally don't think has been bad.

AS far as Mulder goes, I look for the Cards to try to sign him at a discount. He might go for it cause he says he likes STL. But you never know he could just be blowing smoke. I wouldn't pay more than $9 mil a year, based on his performance in the playoffs last year, which was much less than I expected from him.

Re: 2006 STL Cardinals

I would say that with Ponson's and Reyes' last starts, the job is definately going to Sidney. It's evident that Reyes still has some work to to at the AAA level before they insert him into the rotation.

I do have to say that I like the idea of trading Marquis in season for an outfielder. Then plugging in Reyes into that spot.

Btw, I have read the Gonzo rumors also and I think he'd be a good fit all around. I guess there are still some issues with his arm, but the guy just keeps hitting. Which leads me to my next question...

Who starts the year at LF?

Man o' man. I really had hopes for Bigbie, but the guys just hasn't played in spring training. So, I don't know. I guess we could do worse than a platoon of J-Rod and Taguchi.

Man that guy is Soooooo Taguchi!

Alright, bad joke.

What do you guys think? Luna just isn't an everyday anything, so I'm not sure what else there is. I don't think either Gall or Duncan are going to be on the major league roster to start the year, but give Dunc some time at AAA to learn the outfield a little better and they might have something there.

Then there's always Rick Ankiel...

Re: 2006 STL Cardinals

The two position battles have really been dissapointing so far this spring. No one has stepped up to take the job. This is especially discouraging given the fact that the team was hoping their number 2 hitter would come either from 2b or lf. Of course, it's still spring training, but I'd like to see some shines of promise from Spivey/Bigbie before opening day. Otherwise we'll be seeing a lot of Rodriguez/Taguchi and Cruz/Spiezio/Miles/Luna early on.

Re: 2006 STL Cardinals

Actually, it wouldn't break my heart to see Miles win the job. He's not the best defensively, but he can hit and he gives it his all.

I think he'd do pretty well in the 2 hole in front of Pujols.
