Re: MLB 2k12 - Impressions Thread (PS3/X360)

Ok, so I have played about 7 or 8 games... here are my impressions.

  • The ball physics/hit variety is greatly improved
  • The framerate seems to have taken a hit. Not only after the ball is put in play, but when the pitcher is in his motion. I noticed it right away and thought maybe they had just slowed down CC's motion, but it's everyone...and it's maybe one out of every five or six pitches.
  • The player faces that they worked on look a lot better, but a lot of guys weren't even touched. Russell Martin and Freddy Garcia are just two examples I noticed.
  • Crowds look a little better and there arent as many 2D sections..there are some, but not as many.
  • It's definitely nice to see the scoreboards get an update.
  • Ball and Bat sounds are improved, but homeruns still kind of sound weird.
  • Players have a lot of weird animations. I saw a double play where Cano threw the ball to first while making a throwing motion towards Left Field.
  • The free agent bug from the previous renditions of the game is still present, where very few, if any, top level free agents ever make it to free agency.
  • The shadows look a little better.
  • The uniforms look a little worse.
  • There doesnt seem to be any new signature styles, that I could find anyway. My favorite part of this game was always the new player animations but not this year.
Overall, if you loved 2K11 - get it. If you didn't love 2k11, Pass on 2k12. If you were on the fence, pass on 2k12.

Re: MLB 2k12 - Impressions Thread (PS3/X360)

Just turned a double play where Walker (2B) dove towards second after a grounder, flipped the ball from his stomach to the SS, then got the throw at first. Remarkable.

I get the feeling that the user baserunners are a tad slow compared to the CPU, so I turned the slider up one notch. Also, it seems the CPU makes these amazing diving stops too often, if that continues over the next five to seven games I'm going to make a change to that slider as well.

EDIT: Later on in the game, with the score deadlocked at 0 in the 6th, I was sitting on Vogelsong's 2-seam fastball, got it dead center of the zone, and smashed it out of the park with Garrett Jones (76 power). As he swung through the ball, he kinda fell backwards/took a step back, like he had put all this weight into the swing. Really cool.

That was my second HR in as many games (and overall, I might add), the first coming the game before from Barajas, which was a Grand Slam en route to an 8-0 win. That was pretty cool because after the Grand Slam, the pitchers were really timid and it seemed like the air had been taken out of the stadium and of the pitching staff.

I sent my proof to one of the mods but he has yet to respond, so I'll give this quick impression that has immediately jumped out at me. Playing it on PS3 (yes, I bought the other game as well), there is a very noticeable framerate blip when batting and you or the cpu makes contact with the ball.

It happens to me occasionally but it's always foul balls, for whatever reason. Not enough to bother me, though.

Are you on ps3? It was happening to me enough that it was really annoying me and I am not a very nit-picky guy when it comes to my games. Gonna check it out some more in a bit

Nope, XBox. It was worse for me before I went and got the "new" rosters weirdly enough (I got the game on Friday). Since then, it happens to me maybe once or twice a game.

MLB 2k 12 on XBOX

- player faced have improved
- the crowd has improved
- the jerseys have improved
- pitching / hitting have improved
- commentary is still awesome

- OMG the Frame rate loss is horribe!!
After almost every hit and every pitch the game stutters. At one point it actually froze for a second.
- overall the graphics are bad
- cc sabathia looks like a character model from back yard baseball game.
- base running is too slow

Re: MLB 2k12 - Impressions Thread (PS3/X360)

I bought it and it has lived up to my hype and what I expected. Graphics are not up to par with the other game. If you can look past that you will find a really impressive baseball game.

1st inning out of the box. Playing as the Royals, I laced a line drive down the line with Billy Butler that rattled around in the corner and drove in Alex Gordon from second, and right away knew this isn't the same game as last year. There are a ton of little things. The crowd stood up in the cheap seats far in the outfield and you could see them as the ball rattled around. It's pretty awesome if you can look past the surface stuff which is difficult to do sometimes.

yes its a next gen baseball game wrapped up in a last gen graphics engine but it's impressive nonetheless. Underneath its anything but last gen. The game is doing quite a bit it hasn't done in the past. The progessive lighting for one is awesome. The physics are awesome. What's going on underneath is great. But with that come issues.

People expecting a pretty to look at game are going to be disapointed. It's ugly to look at at times. The graphics are a mixed bag and can look really impressive at times to downright ugly like they left stuff in from previous versions that just should not be there. 2k really needs to hire a graphic artist for this game because it's so inconsistant. The player models can look better, to still downright awful. I swear it's like someone pasted a beard on a guy or a haircut that just didn't fit. Same with the stadiums. Like they pasted a wall that someone drew up using some generic paint program in the 3rd grade that has no right being there. On the other side of the fence some of the panned out shots or behind the batter shots, the stadiums can look downright amazing at times and put even the Show to shame as far as scope. The game just has a sense of space that the other game doesn't. The running animations are better but still floaty. It's trying but the hardware just can't do it. I come from playing games from way back though. It reminds me of pc gaming compared to arcade gaming back in the day where you would get those floaty animations sometimes and just ugliness. That's microsoft for you and the architecture we are dealing with though. General purpose cores vs risc proprietary hardware. There are some things the 360 just never will be able to do. IT just can't animate certain things on the fly like that to look seamless. The game can get really choppy and ugly or floaty at times.

Hopefully they patch this stuff because the game is choking pretty bad right now. It seems worse or better depending on which camera angle you are using. OVerall this game takes a lot of steps forward but is still a 2k baseball game with a lot of inconsistencies that can be frustrating. It's a mixed bag of steps forward and amazing things that no other game does, but at the same time there is that ugliness, unfinished quality and choppyness that really takes away from it. In the end it's still that game that is trying to get out of its shell of its former self but it's still left with remnances and is struggling to pull off the new as well. Fielding in the outfield is still a mixed bag where players don't jockey to their position to catch the ball seamlessly and get turned every which way.

It's that game I really want to like, because it's actually really good. But it's such a mishmash right now it's hard to score it. Even if a patch fixes most of the glaring flaws and framerate issues, its still going to be ugly in spots. Most people aren't going to want to deal with these things in this day and age.
