What exactly is "zone hitting"? I remember for a long time baseball games made you move a cursor to the location of the pitch to determine the location of your swing and the size of your cursor varied by how good of a contact hitter you were. I don't dig that at all simply because that doesn't replicate the split second reaction to where a pitch is really going. It's much tougher to track a pitch with your fingers than it is with your eyes. If by zone hitting, you just mean aiming the stick in the relative direction of the pitch location (so pushing the stick up and to the right if the pitch is high and to the right), then that's fine with me.

I agree that baseball is much more than timing only, but I think for gamers, there's a segment out there that doesn't want to mess with zone hitting. They just want to swing and make contact. I think there's a way to do that and still give the game a SIM feel, but it needs to be ratings-driven, similar to what 2K does in its NBA games with Real FG%.
That's exactly how it works, with the added feature this year of having to determine where the swing placement is.

I agree you can simplify it but I don't like it being the simple b/c then users get upset when the ratings don't kick in in their favor. It sure is fun though - I really liked how that one World Series Baseball arcade game did it where you pulled a lever back and let go. BUT... that's not exactly "sim" because of it's simplicity. You need a bit of complication to provide better, more realistic results IMHO.

That's essentially the same thing. Cursor and zone hitting are about selecting where you swing your bat through the imaginary zone over the plate.

Registration is down across the US. I think in today's age of ADD, OCD, ADHD, NintendoDS, most kids today find it boring. Too much standing around, not enough physical contact, not as cool as football or basketball or even hockey, maybe even too hard.

I'd love to know why the numbers are down with African-American's. I don't think there's a shortage of super-star players for young black kids to look up to.

I didn't mean to take this thread offroad, but this I'm very interested in this topic.
But maybe it helps explain why baseball games sell only slightly better than hockey games.
Back in the day, even a Canadian like me couldn't wait to get my hands on the latest baseball game.
Baseball Simulator 2000 was the poop man!

Not to keep the thread derailed, but this is a hatred of mine. As an African-American growing up in bad neighborhoods, baseball was never spotlighted. I played b/c I loved sports, but this put me in the minority (obviously), it's much easier to play basketball alone and/or get a basketball/football and find a park or playground to play.

Funny thing is my city is home to one of the best little leagues in america

I don't want to derail this thread either so I started this one:
Baseball on the decline in US?

I'd love to hear your opinion as to why fewer kids are playing, especially African-American's.
