why is sim a curse word in this game??

When people hear the word sim they instantly think: boring, mundane, and no way in hell thats a fun way to play. I dont think you could be more off base, now let me preface this with I'm 36 and dont have time to scour the internet looking for the hottest new "madden" play or the new "madden" blitz. So yes i just want to sit down and play some football, not madden, now playing sim you can blitz, you can run tosses, you can run counters, you can call 4 verts if you want. But the point is to call all of that in a game, not pick one and run it over and over and over. When most around here say we want sim football, this is what we are referring to(other sim heads chime in)

1. Play variety
2. Realistic play calling(plays that fit the down and distance)
3. no 15 hot routes at the line of scrimmage
4. no excessive blitzing, no one should blitz all game
5. no actions that PURPOSELY manipulate the a.i. if you are going to beat me, then beat me not the a.i.
6. no you tube passing schemes its not realistic to know a play will work before you snap the ball
7. no huddle all game, sprinkled in thats fine
8. punt on 4th down, now 4th and inches, your call, have no problem with someone going for a 4th down or two if it makes football sense(dont use belichick) has your selling point lol
9. respect your opponent, if you are winning late in the game by a large margin, why pour it on, win your game and move on.
10. have fun!!!

now i have a question for the freestyle community: How do you guys have fun playing a game with predetermined outcomes?? I mean you call a play knowing that it will work, like some blitzes you know will work(unless i slide protect, leave all my receivers in to block and ask the referee to trip the DE) You know what i mean. How is this fun?? running the same plays over and over and over how do you gain enjoyment out of that??

I feel you Twoslik, every chance I get I try to stress that "sim" is merely short for simulation, something most Madden gamers I ask, claim to want, regardless of their playstyle.

I guess it's just one of those things like how some American's feel about the term "government", it just carries certain personal stigmas.

But sadly thats EAs target audience. Most font want to play a game of football.... That want to play a football game.

I'm sim. But I have ZERO interest in online. No patience to waste on bogus stuff that has been the norm for YEARS!

I back sim style all the way, but didn't we just have this discussion in another thread a few days ago?

I'm just afraid that both sides will go around and around again and again.

That's all.

I concur, there are plenty of places to find real sim football games online. Hell, you could join the OS online community and find real good football games. A lot of sim sites have their own community and you can find good sim games in there. I haven't played an unsim game of Madden online since September(when I gave up on finding a sim game in play now) and I play online a lot. You just have to know where to look.

I think it's the connotation vs how the "tradition of the game", I guess you could say, is.

If the tradition of the game is to be freeform, do what you want, and if "sim" (or realism/realistic) concepts constrain that, it can (and does) create an unfavorable perception, and, as such, there is some resistance.

On the other hand, those who think 'sim' is a word from [insert your favorite higher power/deity/figure here] see the things in 'sim' that align with them, so there's no resistance and even ardent acceptance.

Another issue is it seems that word was generated from thin air...and remains ethereal because no one standard definition exists. That leaves (more) room for misconception.

That's why I try to avoid the word, even though I'm a nobody in the community, because I can see how it gets mutated sometimes, especially the "anti-sim" arguments that turn into pointing flaws with the game itself than actual realism principles.

It's why I try to use "realistic" vs "unrealistic", since reality has a standard. NFL and rules of the game and how the game flows and what happens on the field, while also allowing for openness and creativity because we all know the NFL is not a static game and any coach with any ability is going to come up with something for their team. For example, Denver's use of the Option, a play that "would never work in the NFL".

So why can't we all form some kind of football coalition, to bring together gamers that want to play football, not video games? That's what I am trying to encourage to happen because all these different sects should be able to create a central Justice League or UN of sorts. lol. The UN is probably the better analogy because everyone can keep there preferred sects intact but let's all have a general meeting point somehow, likely using the online community feature.

Re: why is sim a curse word in this game??

I think of "sim" as realistic locomotion, tackling and player movement, first and foremost. I feel that, for all of the emphasis on playing styles, that's where Madden needs to focus. I won't bring up the CD member's name, but one statement made me cringe. " the developers need to factor in the fast twitch of a shooter...." Wrong. If memory serves right, the same person brought up how the Fifa players felt like they had lead plates in the pants. One of my biggest non "SIM" elements that plague Madden is the goofy locomotion. Then there's the "patty cake." If Madden can ever be thought of as a "sim" title, they need to make the players move and interact in a realistic manner. And that's pretty much how it is in Fifa and NHL. No more quick zig-zags, no more warping... Then Madden can start to build a football sim...
