Will Historic teams make a comeback?

Just wondering if anyone has heard if the Historic teams will ever return to the Madden series? I miss playing with teams like the 85 Bears, 79 Steelers, 66 Packers, etc.. I wish something could get done for the players association to make this happen.

I think it would pay great homage to the legends who laid the foundation of the game we all love. I can't imagine how much fun it would be to play online with these teams. I'd say take the top 4 teams from each year. Would love to get another shot at John Elway with the 86 and 87 Browns!!

nba 2k11 and 2k12 did so well with this concept in their game, why not? it would certainly generate some excitement and celebrate the history of the nfl.

I think it would be pretty difficult to pull off after their class action lawsuit with a bunch of former NFL players.

Re: Will Historic teams make a comeback?

you can create the same players that EA would create yourself.

Besides their rosters are always jacked up why on earth play with classic teams that are just slapped together and given a name with real player identity accept for the jersey # associated with him?

I can show old rosters from EA that show these teams were missing players and then also getting some of the players skin color incorrect.

I applaud any sports game company that includes this type of teams or players with their game. But i hate when a company does a poor job researching the players and just slapping anything together to make up these teams.

The only way i would love to have these teams back in the game is if EA had someone who truly cared about re-creating the players.

Look at their HOF edition this year Jerry Rice with 99 speep, 99-acceleration and 99 agility. I mean come on where the seperation between Rice and a real speed player like Deion Sanders in those ratings?

i agree with last poster the teams were all jacked up and with no names etc but then again that may take away from making a better game if they focus on making them again because they would probly use the excuse of disc space etc like they always seem to use.

Not sure on this, but I don't think they want to be sued by James Brown and others. I thought Brown brought up a lawsuit several years ago.

I think you mean Jim Brown....and you are correct he did file a suit vs EA.

Jim Brown Sues EA, Sony for Madden 'Likeness'

NFL legend accuses EA of using his likeness in Madden without consent.

With the 2008 NFL Hall of Fame inductions taking place just yesterday (and the preseason opener tonight), it seems almost appropriate that Jim Brown -- a Hall of Fame legend himself -- has chosen this week to sue Electronic Arts and Sony over what he claims is the improper use of his likeness in the Madden NFL series (via Bloomberg).
Brown filed the lawsuit in state court in New York this past Thursday, where he complains that he "never signed away any rights that would allow his likeness to be used." While Brown doesn't appear in the game by name, a "muscular, African-American running back wearing the number 32" does appear on the historic "All Browns Team" (Brown wore the number 32 as a running back for the Cleveland Browns from 1957-1965). Brown further argues that Sony and EA have become "unjustly enriched and have received and continue to hold ill-gotten gains," while at the same time devaluing his likeness in the process.

These days, game companies usually sign deals with player associations for the use of professional athlete likenesses in their games (EA, as we all well know, has an exclusive deal with the NFL). But Brown notes in his lawsuit that when he was playing, "the NFL had a league wide policy that players shall have no lawyers or agents when negotiating compensation. Video games were not invented yet and no union to obtain rights from existed."

Brown is seeking unspecified damages for trademark infringement, unauthorized use of his likeness, trademark dilution and unfair business practices and competition. He's also seeking a preliminary and permanent court-ordered halt to the use of his likeness in Madden. While the Madden series has no doubt been most popular on PlayStation hardware in recent years, it's anyone's guess why Brown chose to only include Sony in the lawsuit and not Nintendo and Microsoft as well.

So what are the potential ramifications of this lawsuit for you? Well, if Brown succeeds in the case, it could set a new legal precedent that'd make it far more difficult to include nameless historical players on legendary teams in sports games (perhaps requiring individual contracts with retired players, as was 2K Games' approach with All-Pro Football 2K8). We'll continue to follow this story, so stay tuned.

Re: Will Historic teams make a comeback?

Id settle for sort of a teambuilder feature where you had the option to create the historic teams. It just sucks that with all the great history in the NFL we can't get those legendary squads. I also think it might help educate some of our younger fans on the history of the league. Kids need to know who Bart Starr, Deacon Jones, Mel Blount, and Fran Tarkenton were IMO.

Re: Will Historic teams make a comeback?

EA should just pay the retired players so we could get them in future Madden games. They'd make a killing with higher sales due to fans like us wanting to play with players/teams we grew up watching. A huge reason NBA 2K11 & 12 have done well is the inclusion of classic teams/players. I mean, for example, I'd LOVE to have Marino's Dolphins go up against Elway's Broncos in a Madden game. I'm sure many fans in my age range have similar feelings.

Could you imagine if Madden had say, an Elway Challenge? Recreating The Drive or Elway's first Super Bowl? Or a Montana Challenge with The Catch?

Re: Will Historic teams make a comeback?

I always thought this would be fun for online play...to be able to take two totally different styles against each other - think defense ('78 Steelers, '85 Bears, '00 Ravens) vs. offense ('84 Dolphins, '98 Vikings, '99 Rams, '07 Pats).

Of course, Madden online being what it is, we'd probably be more likely to get a steady diet of offensive juggernauts every game, but how cool would it be to see the old 1970's and 1980's Dallas Cowboys come out and do the line shift before each snap? The original "46" defense line up across the line with (#55)Wilson-(#58)Marshall-(#99)Hampton-(#76)McMichael-(#72)Perry-(#95)Dent with (#50)Singletary behind them? Or instead of "tebowing", get to see the Redskins' "Fun-Bunch" or Rams' "Bob-'n-Weave"? Merton Hanks? "White-shoes" Johnson? Butch Johnson?

All-time teams or even just a return of all previous Super Bowl match-ups would be a very welcome addition!
