man coverage - my approach

Are you guys running man defense very much? I seem to run man the majority of the time but the coverage seems to break down about 3 or 4 seconds after the ball is snapped.

A few rules I have for man coverage

1. Only run man out of 4-3 if you are in an over under formation. Otherwise your middle linebacker will never make it to the flat to cover the RB.

2. Forget about 2 safeties. drags and slant routes across the middle are open all day. You need one of those safeties to take away an underneath option

3. Either have a man in a middle zone or rush at least 5 guys.

4. You must read strong side before the ball is hiked. Reverse your formation to get the safety in man coverage on the side with the extra interior receiver. By interior I mean your TE, RB, or 3rd WR. Your CBs automatically line up over the #1 and 2 WRs.

5. Mix in bump and run.

I usually get good coverage for a few seconds. Passes across the middle get picked. Bringing the extra guy gets me quite a few sacks. Most importantly that safety jumps on RBs out the back field really quickly.

How are you guys mixing in man coverage?

I don't run quite as much zone because of the screen exploits. And a good player can really tear up a zone with the pass game

I generally play an OLB on the HB to play containment on that kind of stuff. You can even set it up in the Def Matchups so you don't have to do it pre snap...

Instead of having the two safeties cover deep blue zones you 'user' one of them or assign both of them to another type of zone?

Whenever I use man, I usually get beat on slants and drags.

Every once in a while i will use will use 'QB Contain' to mix things up and it's been quite effective if I use it sparingly. I've seen a lot of incompletions/overthrows when I use this play.

Re: man coverage - my approach

I run man to man about 80% of the time, I seem to always get killed on zone unless it's a well-timed blitz. With that said, no defense works unless you put pressure on the QB, I say minimum 4 guys and almost always 5 rushing. Switching to quarter at certain situations has blown up in my face time and time again, 3 guys just can't get it done. I've also found that not trying to beat the LT if key to applying pressure, it's just going to get you pancaked. Try the other side or up the middle and you'll be surprised at the number of sacks you can rack up!

By the way, I learned alot about man to man in your post, thanks! How do you reverse your formation once the play has been called though?
