Oh, and this is WAY off topic but I'm trying to start a mini-revolution to get the 3-4 fixed in Madden... I'd be curious to hear some of your thoughts.

You have to start a franchise and replace a team... then you can sign all the free agents you want. You can't do it in the regular Edit Roster menu.

ahh dam that sucks I was hoping on a way to stop the free agent list being full

Hmmm... could be fun, what team do you throw out of the league when you do a franchise? Do their players go to free agency or just dissapear?

It depends on what created team I make... I try to keep the cities the same. I also don't like replacing a premier team or a team with a lot of history.

Yeah, I do it for a challenge and it's really fun. I usually just replace a team that I could see relocating in real-life NFL and that doesn't have a lot of big-name players, such as the Bills or Rams.
The most fun part to me is having no former opinion of any of the players. Since they're all fictional you have to judge them based on performance and not name.
