Is the vision cone or formation subs in the PS2 version?

I'm glad this site has a devoted Madden and 2K forum section, although it rarely prevents the "war" between the two games.

Anyways, I'm planning on renting 09 PS2 this weekend to see how it is.

Yes, but if you use the vision cone you cant use the QB avoidance feature because they are both mapped to the right analog stick. There is no option to turn on the vision cone for the cpu though.

So the vision cone is optional?

Is it ok to just talk about anything in this thread regarding the PS2 version of madden 09?

If so, I'll start off by asking.....Do you play or skip training camp before each pre-season? I go through training camp personally, but I really wish it was harder to get a gold trophy on the All-madden level in some of the drills.

Yes, for the user only though. It is always of for the cpu no matter what.

Let me clarify. I was speaking more in a figurative, facetious sense. When the PS2 came out, the PS1 still produced Madden for a little while longer, but you knew it was just a matter of time before the PS1 Madden was put out to pasture. The simultaneous life of the PS2 and PS3 is going on about the same amount of time as the two previous system's simultaneous existance but the PS2 Madden still seems to be either holding its own or even gaining steam. Why should the PS2 Madden even be considered for retirement. That's all I meant, no harm intended.

talk about whatever you like in regards to the PS2 version. I am just asking that we don't have meltdowns or start another flame war.

I skip training camp since it appears that the cpu teams don't use it. I feel as though its an unfair advantage to do especially since some drills are extremely easy.

Really? I never paid attention to whether or not cpu uses it. It is kinda cheap if the cpu doesn't gain from it. I might stop using it then.

Another thing I would like to ask about is spot lighting a receiver. I think this has been in the ps2 version since last year but I have yet to use it in-game. What exactly is the risk and reward to this feature? I tried it out one time in practice mode and the cpu beat me deep with a different receiver from the one I was spot lighting.

Now let me say this off the bat, its not that I think the PS3 is a bad game, because in my opinion its not, in fact I think its a good game, I just feel as though the PS2 version is a more complete game. How so you may ask? Well lets get something else out there. The PS2 version can't compete in terms of graphics or animations. Thats a given. And the franchise mode in both versions is pretty lame, although I would give the slight nod to the PS2 version only because of player progression in preseason and the fact that I can see position battles in the preseason. I know, pretty minute huh?

But on the field, the PS2 version stands above the PS3. The atmosphere for one is more enticing, given the refs on the field, the chain gang, the crowd, the grass stains during non weather games, the dirt infields during the first few weeks of the season, and the animated coaches. Again, its minute, but it really draws you in. And to be quite honest, I enjoy listening to Madden and Michaels call the game vs Collinsworth and Hammond, even though M&M's commentary has been recycled for many, many years.

But aside from the "fluff", the core gameplay is more solid. Fatigue, the ability to have player matchups, the ability to shade defenders inside or out to better guard slants and/or out patterns, smart zones on defense(being able to have your zone defenders "guard" the first down line) the ability of the QB avoidance, the cpu challenging plays, and seeing passes go awry and/or be dropped are really welcomed and once you play the older versions, you quickly realize how much you are missing them. Robo QB, as people have termed it, still seems the same in the PS2 as the PS3, although the user is given more weapons to counteract. At least, I guess given the complaints I've seen.

This isn't meant to bash the PS3 version nor meant to be used as a springboard to bash the next gen versions and EA, although we all know it will and which is why I was hesitant to post this at all. But I felt it could be useful to Ian and others to see what a fan of EA football fan thinks about the comparison between the two versions.

Anyhow, I'll stop here and let other discuss/debate my "findings" and hopefully this thread can stay mature and maybe offer some valuable feedback in regards to what a person like me is looking for in the PS3 version that it doesn't have yet, but really added to the atmosphere of the PS2 version. Who knows.

But please, lets not turn this thread hostile. If anyone has any specific questions about the PS2 version or would like to know more info on what I feel is better/worse, feel free to ask away. But I will answer one question that people may ask. Yes, I will and am still playing the PS3 version and yes, I now own both versions of the game. Ok, maybe I answered two questions.

..oh bro...no way...that bit about you saing the ps2 version of madden's atmosphere better then Madden 2010 has me "very" confused and suspect of your opinions .. i never seen a "lick" of atmosphere in any past Madden to date, period...nodda, nathan, zip, zilch... the only madden to have a tiny lick of atmoshere is this years xbox 360/ps3 Madden 09 and it aint much but it atleast as alot more life and atmosphere, presentation over any other madden..including anything ever on the ps2, thas for sure.

As far as the ps2 version being more fundamentally solid..well i agree its more well rounded in gameplay overall but i think Madden 2010 will be the cream of the crop and the madden to date, just wait and see, mark my words on that too.

Its just this, graphics and realistic animations is a HUGE part to the "fun" factor of a videogames.. simply put, graphics help make games fun and nice anmiations on top of it is also important and considered icing on the cake if the visuals are there..which they are in Madden, there for make the gaming experience just sooo much better on the xbox 360/ps3... and thats the bottom line. Yeah i read all your other stuff..but really, this is the bottom line why most of us (yes your the minority here with your post) ..is why most of us have put madden ps2 to rest now.. most of us just cant go back to that old engine even if its great and solid.. most people i know that im long time friends with at neogaf.com (hardcore gaming forum) agree on this exactly what im saying.. just a few weeks ago we had a huge thread on games coming out that ps2 and ps3.. how its damn hard to play games on old systems now days with these new generation systems outs.
