Re: After playing the PS3 version for about 2 months and the PS2 version about 5 days

After playing the PS3 version since release, I just rented the PS2 version because of this thread. If you can get over missing graphics/animations, the game plays better overall.

Pregame/postgame is better. Immersion with refs and chain gangs is great. I feel like an asset again when controlling my defenders, strafing all over the place, reading the routes and making user picks. Also, the players turn with more weight and momentum. There's more gadget plays too -- I scored 2 TDs with Moss on a WR reverse and WR screen. Yup, screen passes actually work great, with the OL pancaking CBs! Oh yeah, and bombing the ball deep is as easy as tapping the button for a lob, regardless of the WRs distance downfield. And I noticed there seems to be more passes in between lob and bullet. Oh, and WRs catch in stride better. I haven't gotten into it yet, but there's a cool sounding feature where you can save your hot-routed plays as custom audibles for both O and D. While I'm loving the old truck stick animation that bowls clean over CBs, I am missing the gang tackles and break tackle mechanics. Also, it's too easy to run outside compared to next gen.

One major complaint though -- still no custom controls. I'll NEVER understand why EA wouldn't include the ability to make the controls however you want... WTF!?!?! Really, what's the point in limiting this? I just got used to '09 controls and now the learning curve begins again. ARGH!

No. you're not. I'll never understand this devotion to this game. People would have you think it was the greatest game ever made, when in fact it was glitchy as hell. In my opinion , madden 05 on the ps2 was a much better game. Sure, theres better presentation on 2k5, but you get sick of that after a few games anyway, and you skip right past it....

lets not turn this into a 2k vs EA thread please.

This is why I was hesitant to create this thread, because I knew at some point, it would start heading down this path.

Ok, then if you prefer Madden over 2k, then how about a 99 cent copy of Madden 05 with updated rosters?

That game is superior to Madden 09 and it's last gen also.

I already own Madden '05

Besides, Madden '09 and Madden '05 are pretty much identical. I mean, the engine hasn't changed since......

It pains me to read this since I dont have a PS2 and the 40GB PS3 I do have doesnt run any PS2 games so Im stuck. Glad to hear some are finding the gaming experience they were hoping to find with the next gen offerings of Madden and its really unfortunate that at this point we are relegated to running a game on an inferior system because EA has suddenly decided that the visual bells and whistles are more important then the actual gameplay on the field.
